    We all have to eat. So I thought about us all 'chipping' in and sharing likes, dislikes, you name it, anything relating to the way we prepare, cook our food.

    As a kid. I recall Sunday mornings visiting relatives and friends. Front door opens and out wafts the smell of cooking. So often the Sunday dinner was started to be cooked at the same time. Cabbage finally reduced to more of a drink than a chomp. Please share your likes and dislikes.

      Hi Mike, I can remember my Mum cooking/baking on an old kitchen range, the one you have to Black Lead. Also remember Mum putting on an old pair of knickers on her head (to keep her hair clean) to clean out the flue.
      Oh and the outside Loo with no light...........don't get me started on that:nonofinger:

          I remember relatives adding bicarbonate of soda to veg and boiling it to death. That and adding a heap of salt to the boiling water. Soggy salty grey veg …… yum ! :eeew:

            Times change, at one time all we had when we only had one child was a four ring cooker, a toaster, a fridge and a dresser that contained food, pots and crockery.

            My wife is known in the family as "The Gadget Queen." Because of the kitchen stuff she has.

            We have a built-in oven with a big cupboard over the top and two big drawers below it full of "pots and trays." No boiling rings, two halogen hobs, which can be wiped over and put away immediately after use. The work surfaces of our tiny kitchen are full of gadgets.

            There's this huge carousel full of "stuff" It's cute, you push the solid door in, it locks and you can spin it, with one finger, it'll make a complete revolution if you don't stop it and it will stop itself and the door springs forward and locks in position. The kitchen is fourteen years old this year and still in perfect condition, everything still works!

            Tall cupboard for packaged grocery.

            Full width drawers for utensils and for cutlery.
            Big drawer for "lock n' lock" containers, another for crockery.
            More food and more utensils below.
            Only soft-close drawers below the work surfaces.
            Tea, coffee, chocolate and Amaretto biscuits in the thin drawer.

            On the other side of the kichen there's a 7ft tall Meile fridge/freezer and we've an under counter and table top freezer in the shed.

            Only two people live in this house!

            These are good. Non-stick silicone oven-proof mats of different sizes. Used to protect cooking trays from food getting stuck to them.

              Jeez - I remember that! And it was too salty as well :gaah:

              Likes? Chillie, garlic, fennel seeds, tomatoes, cheese (how I like cheese!), olives, good dates, sea food. The list goes on.

              Dislikes (or should that be loathes?) include; sweetcorn (the devils rabbit bumbles), tomato ketchup, cooked carrots, parsnip (why would anyone want to eat hot polystyrene?), chilli powder, gravy granules, the stalky bits of the lettuce leaf, milk (but I love cream :dunno:), how difficult it is nowadays to buy good old fashioned cheddar, semolina.

              My current favourite thing is gnocchi fried in garlic infused rapeseed oil and then dusted with smoked paprika and parmesan.

                  My Mum was from Darlington and she made the best roast beef, yorkshire pud and veggies every Sunday. She always roasted the beef medium rare YUM!

                  @longk I detest milk too and it's probably a good thing as it bothers my system and I'd hate for people to start calling me "Windy Lori" :heehee: I love cheese and for some reason it doesn't bother me :scratch:

                  I have a giant sweet tooth. Unless it's a lemon or lime, fruit will not pass these lips unless it is heavily encrusted in sugar.... well, not, I won't eat a peach or pear under any circumstances!

                  I like just about every vegetable so I assume that is why I don't have scurvy :)

                      In reality, all my wife's gadgets are more for her to be able to cope with her MS, rather than attempt any involved cookery these days. Many years ago she did a series of Cordon Bleu cookery classes with her friend, at evening classes. They liked it so much they did it again the following year! But now it needs to fairly simple and not too tiring. She doesn't eat a lot but she does like fish, particularly haddock and skate.I'll only eat fish if it has batter on it.
                      I quite like lamb chops, pork steaks, spag bol and the occasional burger. Saturdays is always ham off the bone with salad. We have at least one, Chinese takeaway delivered each week from a decent restaurant.

                      We do have a lot of M&S prepared vegetables, But always a roast dinner on Sundays. At present she's into soup making. She does a different one ever day in her soup maker.

                      When I said she had a drawer for utensils, I wasn't kidding. I've no idea what half of them are for. 'cept the well-used bottle opener, that's mine.

                      I don't cook anything other than toast, or heat up something in the microwave. I'm not that fussy about food. But I am about coffee, I make the cappuccinos.

                        Well, @Doghouse Riley those are all lovely kitchen utensils and appliances. Yours would seem to be the best place to do a B&E. Both for music lovers and chefs :) Talk about window shopping :rolleyespink:

                          We are both avid cooks, all of our meals are homemade. I make cheese, Stilton, Cheddar, we cure our own bacon, we sous vide...in fact, we did a 3lb silverside @ 57c for 24 hours only last weekend.

                          We BBQ, smoke meat/cheese both hot & cold, we travel to BBQ events around the UK, being a member of a USA style BBQ forum.

                          My last Stilton which we cut over Christmas..

                          After slicing we vac-pack and pop them in the freezer, If I remember correctly the plate on the right is sweet cured, the left one is just black pepper.

                              Ok. For us oldies, despite all tghat now goes against the grain. Way back. We had to live and survive. Take a look at us now. Some of us, perhaps into our 80's and 90's and for better or worse probably much healthier than the mods of today with all their calory and carb things.

                              My memories are. After the war. We had whale steaks, we ate horse meat. Many a night at supper. Mum would dish up plates of pigs trotters and pigs tails. Times when dad was laid up with bleeding stomach ulcers. I'd take the barrow to Woolwich market. I'd load up with cabbage and waste veg for our rabbits and chickens, I'd also checkout the fish bins. Many a time I'd take home conger eel heads. Great food. Thankfully our mums, wives always managed to make a meal out of nothing. Sadly today. What can a wife, mother offer her family?

                                Dear god. You are aware that a lot of the women on this board are wives and mothers, aren't you? Anything else you want to insult them with?

                                The reason Baby Boomers and War Children are living longer is that they, you, are a blessed generation. You've had the NHS all your life, along with the Welfare State, to look after you. As you've gotten older, technology has made life easier and easier. You no longer have to spend as much energy doing things as your grandparents did. So maybe you should be counting your blessings rather than thinking yourself superior.
