And how much of the rest of the world only came into existence after the Brexit vote?! It has always been there - the markets that can afford us already deal with us and we already have (or should I say, had) deals in place and the remainder really ain't worth bothering with.

Put a wee bit bluntly, poppycock. Britain itself was on its knees when we joined. The former Eastern Bloc countries are on the whole moving forward, (especially the Czech Republic and Poland), Belgium, Holland etc.

There is political unrest all over the world. It is one of the results of the totally instant internet age.

Forgive me, but Jesus H Christ! The £39bn is what we had agreed to pay before the vote. People don't get divorced, divvy up the house and tell the mortgage lender to bog off! It was a pre-existing agreement/commitment.

Here we go again! I guess that the above is representative of the British approach to business, manufacturing in particular - it's great as long as we don't have to invest in it and it all happens by magic! The EU is a trading bloc. You grow that bloc by investing in weaker economies so that they grow and become bigger markets. That is why contributions are based on GDP.

Cool - I hate 'em too, especially the tossers on pavements!

The rest of the world clearly did exist before the Brexit vote, but how many of them were we prevented from signing deals with directly because our EU membership doesn't allow it? Not withstanding the fact that the EU countries themselves will not suddenly want to stop trading with us - they need our stuff, we need theirs, the main thing stopping that from happening easily is self-serving politicians/

No change there then - Britain is on its knees now! Knackered roads, waste management that is not fit for purpose, a major housing shortage, social care in a mess, public transport either non-existant or in a right old state, schools in disrepair and the NHS underfunded to name but a few. Don't look too good from where I started.

Utter bull. I am glad you feel rich enough to be able to believe that, but would respectfully suggest that many of the failures noted just above coupled with being taxed to the neck and having our lives controlled to the n'th degree is more likely to be the case.

Really? It was my understanding that the figure was arrived at in the first few months following the vote, and that a significant lump of it was to pay for future projects, not to pay off a debt. I would certainly be interested to see what we are paying all that money for. And what of the money that we are owed by the EU? I read somewhere that there are billions held/invested somewhere in the EU that is going to take around 15-20 years to get back. I am pretty sure that if you sold your house and the bank told you that you couldn't have the money for a couple of decades, you would be a bit cheesed off?

I understand that there needs to be investment in something to encourage growth, but from where I am sitting it appears that the only country that is prospering to some degree is Germany - even France is starting to struggle, and that surely has to be partly/mostly due to the amount of debt that has been racked up? Odd how there is so much money going in to all of these countries and the EU and yet everyone is skint?

You want to try being disabled and dealing with them - one of these days a walking stick is going to go into a wheel......

Still on the subject of bottles :heehee:. It has just been announced that there's a shortage of glass because of the cutback on plastic and that the price of wine will go up because of the shortage, making wine bottles more expensive. That should put a smile on the faces of execs at O-I UK and may even bring more jobs to our local economy.

More jobs, more drivers to drive them lorrys, but if the new drivers aren't used to loads of glass bottles there's going to be even more broken bottles, you need a smooth foot on the gas, break and clucth pedals, ever seen 1,000,000 bottes on the ground after lorry sheds it load, i have and it take a breeding long time to clean up the mess

Only if I can move to Canada - I will happily work in some sort of position co-ordinating and liaising with the UK, particularly specialising in the trade of beer.

Or, I could be an official taster for the UK, deciding which products Canada could export....... oh yes, I'd be happy doing something like that.

I still go through 10 kilos of flour every month because I love to bake and share it. You could taste test those goods too!
