        Can't stand aubergines, but I grow them to make the tons of ratatouille that I conserve each summer. I've found lots of ways of disguising them :biggrin: One of the best is Brinjal pickle!

          The popularity of aubergines always amazed me . I eat them but enjoy them like the dark green cabbage I was force fed as a kid ...:frown:

                I don't think that I could possibly describe Brie as slimey. It's a soft cheese, but not slimey.
                I am being slightly harsh about Somerset Brie though. I did once find a nice one, not great like some of the French Brie but certainly very good. Trouble is that it was from an artisan producer and quite simply the dearest brie that I've ever bought.

                The thing is that cheese is like films and music - what you want depends on your mood. Cheese (cheddar), bovril and salt and vinegar crisps in a sandwich is the best sarnie ever. But sometimes I want bacon, stilton and mushrooms in a baguette. Sometimes we just want a plate of crackers (Jacobs Cream Crackers, there is no substitute, ever, stop messing with stuff!) and Wensleydale. When I go out to Sicily I make sure that I come back with good Mozzerella because the good stuff is lovely with tommies and watercress (the not good stuff as sold in our s/markets IS slimey).
                The Dutch make some great cheeses too. Extra mature Gouda (Overjarg) is a classic. Proper Edam is very different to the rubber that is sold over here. There is also a blue Gouda, a cheese made with cummin seeds (Leidsekaas) and soft cheese too.

                  Re Brie,
                  Many years ago I had a friend who owned a cheese shop in France. He said it's not a proper Brie unless it's trying to run off the counter. He said that if it's firm and rubbery it's not good Brie. :noidea:

                  He also sold French sticks (baked them on the premises) and said the locals would think he's mad if he tried to put them into one of those long paper bags. They were given a paper serviette to carry them. He said that he was always sold out of bread by 8 a.m. as the locals came in early for their bread and cheese.

                  I got that habit when we used to stay in a villa in the wilds of Majorca. We needed to drive into the village by 7 a.m. to the little house that baked the bread. There was always a queue outside at that time and they were closed by 7.30. The village supermarket sold commercial bread all day but didn't get many locals, only tourists.

                  Totally spot on. Never kept in the fridge here, just left on the side to stink the house out!

                      My village boulangerie was run by a downmarket double of Jack Nicholson, complete with string vest, Gauloise and a very unfortunate personality due to being permanently out of his skull on Pastis. The bread was totally inedible, even freshly baked. The whole village breathed a sigh of relief when the place burned down. The commune bought the premises and we've got a new boulanger moving in next month :hapfeet:. Shame I'm cutting out carbs, really....:sad:

                        What exactly did this lady think she was going to achieve by taking her clothes off?

                        How does it lend anything to a reasoned argument? She is a Doctor (not in the medical sense), which would suggest that she has a great deal of intelligence (much more than I do, for sure) - so why does she feel the need to expose herself to further her argument?

                        It worries me enough that out country is being controlled by a bunch of overgrown students, without one of them somehow believing that this is a suitable way to futher or support any argument. Indeed, if this is the level of what constitutes reasoned debate and argument in this country, no wonder we are in trouble.

                        In fact, I cannot understand why she has not been charged for a public decency offence, given that she would know that there are cameras filming in the radio studio and broadcasting online (and she must have known, otherwise why bother taking her clothes off?)
