Great film on C5 late last night starring Emilia Clarke, with the "articulated eyebrows."

Seems to have a cult following. 25M hits on this one video.

 

Looks like a good film, wish i had recorded it.

 

We watched Me Before You after Mr Kandy recorded it and I must say we both loved it and it brought tears to our eyes especially the ending.

Also Saturday evening as there wasn’t much else on we sat and recorded as well as watching They Shall Not Grow Old and although there was a lot of graphic stuff we still can’t begin to imagine the horrors those young men endured to give us our freedom and to think within twenty years we went through it all again and millions more lost their lives for us. It would do every generation good to sit and watch this documentary film so they can appreciate the sacrifices that was made and the fact that a lot of those youngsters lied so that they were able to enlist especially in the Great War

Still enjoying Call The Midwife as they have good story lines especially like this week about mixed race marriages and back street abortions and last week a little baby was born with with and air lip and cleft palet (this was what we knew it to be called) when my parents took on my younger brother and then adopted fifty seven years ago when his unmarried mum didn’t want him and neither did the potential adoptive parents as he wasn’t perfect

Later on we watched the final part of Les Miserables and have also been enjoying Cleaning Up

 

@Kandy I watched They Shall Not Grow Old again (seen it 3 times now) and I'm still in tears. Horrendous. You could see how petrified some of them looked before going over the top. You could also see how some were putting in a brave face. Makes me angry how the poor chaps were treated when they got home.

I know that the film has been sent to every secondary school in the UK for students to watch. A very good idea.

 

I'm half way through "They Shall Not Grow Old," as you say very graphic. Those who make war documentaries in the current "snowflake era" would shy away from such realism.

 

Started watching ”Better Call Saul” series 4 tonight. Love it!

Anyone else watching it? Anyone else love Breaking Bad? Id never really been into watching series on tv, but BB was a turning point for me-I was hooked!!

 

I can't say I've been too enamoured of a lot of dramas on TV lately.

Some fall within "My Laws of Television." I posted on Urban Dictionary ten years or so ago. It was really just a **ss take, but there's an element of truth in all of them.

Still on the bright side, the new series of Endeavour starts on Sunday.

 

I haven't seen the film in question but yes, it would probably a good thing for many to see what really took place. So much money is still being made out of war stories, both wars that is, so much is glorified on the screen that tends to make war something of a glamourous adventure. POW's being starved to death, yet on screen looking like Mr. Universe.
The man who later became my father, joined up for the 1914-18 war. He was one of the first to be sent to the Western Front. 8515 Pvt Allen. M. 1st. Batt, Irish Guards. At one point. Following a gas attack, he was found by medics to be the only survivor in their fox-hole. He was blined by the gas and thakfully his eyesight eventually was restored. However the gas caused terrible damage to his inside and also to sensitve body areas especially the genitalia.

Then along came WW2. He volunteered again and served in North Africa, against Rommel. He sustained several injuries being shot a few times. Eventually he was discharged. I remember our old GP saying to me. Young Mick, you will never be a tough as your old man.

Times were hard for most. Dad was one of the first member of the British Legion to be made a Life Member when the legion became, The Royal British Legion. Times got harde and when I applied to the Legion for help, I was basically told to P-off.

How those men were, even now treated is beyond belief.

There is no glamour to war and killing or dying. Lest we forget.

 

@Snorky and @Linz. Yes, we are fans of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Remember the billboard that has Saul Goodman in big letters ... having lived in the Deep South for many years we think it really says/means ...S'all Good Man!

So many did a lot in thhe war and got little thanks for it.

My dad was a regular in 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards before the war.
So he was in the B.E.F. and evacuated from Dunkirk. Never spoke about his experiences, other than to say that ehen they were on the beach waiting to be taken off, he said as he looked along it, the sand was "black with discarded rifles."

His regiment became part of the 8th Army, so he was in the North Africa Campaign and then up through Italy.

As the Queen is Col. in Chief of that regiment, he and my mother always went to the garden party at Buck House, she held for all ex-servicemen of that regiment every year.
He did say that before they embarked for France, a "Hooray Henry" in the mess asked him, "Does one take one's sword to France?" To which he replied, "No, we'll have to make do with bayonets."

 

It hooked me too which is SO UNLIKE ME !! Learnt more about meths and Mexico than I ever knew. No wonder USA is in such a mess ! Fascinating tho@
Also a great fan of Better Call Saul - will it come back? Also loved The Designated Survivor - all on Netflix. Will there be a sequel there I wonder?
