Well being an auditor/accountant I religiously check my bank statement. Credit card too. I do use amex though and must say they are fab. I had one day where about £800 was spent on train tickets! They called me straight away (id not even had chance to check my statement when they notified me). Excellent fraud team. Money refunded immediately and reported to their fraud unit etc etc. However, with my auditor brain I rang thetrainline.com who had processed the fraudulent payments to get the address of where the tickets were posted to. I had to wait 14 days for a response and then they only told me that they cant give me these ddtails now due to new GDPR rules. Such a shame that the criminals privacy is also protected.

I agree. They're also brilliant when phoning them. They pay me 1.5% (used to be 2%) cashback on all transactions and no monthly charge.

That’s a good deal. We have a British airways amex and get avios points instead. Means that I can tag along with mr snorky on his work trips at a discounted price....which has then meant I have saved up my own BA points and I’m a silver member (how embarassing when they announced it at the beginning of a flight and the head chap shook my hand CRINGE!) anyway-means you can use their airport lounges and often get upgraded for free (my trip to antigua was in First class hee hee). Good old amex and good old BA.

Check all the time, but we never use a credit card/debit card online, we phone companys to order and pay, with Amozon with use gift cards and only put on what we need to do some buying and make sure the balance is very low, tight git you are Jiffy

Ah did you know though that calling and giving them your details you are more at risk of the person on the other end stealing your details. Secure online transactions (look for the padlock on your browser bar) are safer as the information is instantly tokenised and unreadable. Also with online transactions you are covered by your credit card-not the case with payments over the phone. We always use credit cards online-mr snorky wont let me do otherwise. (He’s an IT security architect/consultant) :)

There's been a lot of complaints about that Amazon Prime scam. That's why they are so willing to hand the money back straight away as it's covered by all the people who don't check and have £7.99 go out of their account without their knowledge.

I'm on too tight a budget to do that. I have to account for every penny. So I check once a week. And as I don't have a credit card a lot of my shopping is done online on secure sites and paid for through Paypal which is attached to my bank account. Or is done locally and paid for by cash.

I wholeheartedly agree with ricki when he said everyone should have a mobile phone. I often urge elderly folk to do so. As an emergency tool it is so important whether in a vehicle or at home or in fact anywhere.....very cheap pay as you go options are available. :)

Good afternoon on a serious side as a very senior citizen as I often venture out on country walks in the woods to seek solitude and most of the time never see anyone for miles, my mobile give's me a sense of safety and comfort as everyone as strict instructions never to ring me unless there is a dire emergency, such as a Brexit deal has been made:heehee: it never rings/or in my case its Bette Midler "Wind Beneath My Wings"

. Paypal is an excellent way to transact online. They are brilliant. Been scammed a few times via ebay lately but as paid for using paypal, its refunded pretty much instantly. Very good peace of mind.

I had a company Amex card when I worked for Honeywell, only problem was no one wanted to take Amex due to their charges. I don't know what it's like now .

You are right that payments online made when the padlock is showing is possibly more secure than over the phone transactions as the person on the other end of the phone may not be trustworthy (a very unlikely situation in most cases) but online payments can be compromised if your computer has also been compromised.

Although you are right with most of what you said your comment above is not correct. You are covered under Section 75 for all credit card payments if the total cost of the item is £100 or more (up to £30,000) as long as it's not paid through a third party agent. Third party agents include PayPal :rolleyespink:. So paying over the phone by credit card is covered under Section 75.

Because paying through Paypal loses your Section 75 rights, Paypal has brought in their own protection scheme. This works fine, most of the time, but I have handled a few cases where Paypal were being particularly awkward and needed a lot of pressurising.

A lot of outlets now have a much lower Amex charge. Even Aldi now accept Amex!

I check both my credit card and bank account on-line at least once a week. I refuse to go paperless. If your computer goes down you're screwed for a while. Both have to send me statements. I mirror both my bank account on rolling "Open Office" spreadsheets. It used to be on Excel, but when I changed laptops they wanted me to pay for Excel again, so I wouldn't. Open Office is exactly the same and is a free programme.

I check both accounts against my spread sheets. I print off my copy of my credit card account and pin any receipts to it where a guarantee or proof of purchase may be required and file them away.
I always clear my credit card balance every month. In fact as soon as I can see on-line how much it is, I make a credit transfer for it, to be paid on the actual due date.

I can't say I've ever had a problem with either account in the last ten years. Some decades ago, before I had a computer, I noticed a double debit on my bank statement. When I looked further down the page, there was an entry which read "Whoops!" and a credit for the duplicated debit was against it.

That’s good @shiney I didn’t know there was protection on over the phone payments so that’s reassuring. What about debit card payments over the phone? I guess that is up to your own bank?

Yes-obviously you have to make sure you’re own pc is secure, but you’d be mad not to keep your firewalls etc up to date in this day and age. A really good free anti virus (etc) is Grisoft AVG. Although I now rely on mr snorks to deal with all that!

Debit card payments aren't covered under Section 75, whether online or over the phone. If you're buying something costing £100 or more then you should never use a Debit card. The only recourse you have with Debit cards is 'chargeback'. This is not a good cover for you as it relies on the goodwill of the bank. Under chargeback you dispute the payment, and need to give good reason, and the bank will put a stop on the payment and hold the money. They then give the seller the chance to dispute it. If they do dispute it then the bank can make their own decision. There is no legal requirement for them to do anything. Debit cards are a 'buyer beware' product.

Credit cards are covered under Section 75 by law.
