Umm..the actions of the EU or the constant exaggeration and misrepresentation of European directives by the gutter press? You asked "Why? What is the ultimate aim?" I thought it was to bring some sort of standardisation throughout Europe, to enable free movement, free trade, equalise standards of living and working conditions. OK, probably an impossible aim anyway, but it has always been portrayed as a direct attack on UK 'values'. Well, where I lived, the 'UK' lost it's values decades ago but it wasn't because of the EU. It was because of incompetent and greedy UK politicians, uncontrolled immigration and the scary power of the gutter media. If you could accuse the EU of anything, it would be that it is an unregulated gravy train for those self-same greedy and corrupt politicians. Perhaps they'll take on board the discontent throughout Europe? Let's hope so.

Well yes, sounds good, standardisation just as long as we accept their standards, free movement, yes we have had a lot of that, free trade, but under their rules, equalise standards of living, but the rich countries rip off the poor ones and import their labour, equalise working conditions yeah, that's a good one.
Lets all go on a 35 hr week;)

How about us all having the same amount of holidays.

I tend to think uncontrolled immigration comes along with free movement;)

Not quite the same thing! Most european countries require legal immigrants to be able to prove that they have the means to support themselves, without becoming a burden on the social security system of the host country. Most european countries also have the right to implement that law as they see fit. Where the brown stuff hits the fan is having hundreds of thousands of economic migrants of former colonies piling in, as well as hundreds of thousands of illegals.
As for holidays....that's HM's government for you (again)

Ok, so some immigrants are ok, as long as they come from Europe that means all those queueing up at Calais are OK.
Why does Europe let them in?
Only because they know they can fast track them to the UK, and most of them don't come from former colonies.
Merkel sent most of then a welcome message and then the EU say we should take our share.

As to holidays, yes I tend to agree, but the EU put their foot down in certain areas but tend to be flexible in others.
Mostly the ones that dont benefit the individual.

There has been a lot of stupid rules/regulations that have been brought in by the EU or the UK Government has been forced to bring in because of the EU that are nothing more than red tape and jobs for the boys. CPC being one that immediately springs to mind that I have first hand experience of - it was foisted upon us by the EU, is a complete and utter waste of time and money, and France basically told the EU to pee off and they never did it.

The laws regarding incandescent light bulbs is another, as is the limiting of the power consumption of various appliances such as vacuum cleaners; I read somewhere (quite a while ago) that the main reason that HS2 continues is the fact that it is in some law/statute from the EU parliament that we (all EU countries over a certain size) must have a high speed rail network.

Then we come to the air quality standards that were relatively rapidly ramped up, to the point that engine manufacturers couldn't keep up - hence things like dieselgate - and now that has led to the highway robbery that is taking place in London with the ULEZ scheme, which is all being done so that the EU don't take us to court and have us fined for breaching arbitrary levels that they basically made up! Coal fired power stations are essentially a no-no, and Germany will quite happily allow exports to other countries outside the EU (including the manpower) to build coal fired power stations.

Your gravy train assessment could not be closer to the mark, and when it boils down to it for me, I have little to no respect or trust in politicians of any variety, be they EU or UK.

Did you miss the point on purpose? European countries accept anyone from anywhere as long as they can support themselves. For legal resident status, you have to prove that you have a minimum level of income and health cover. If the UK hasn't, up till now, applied the same requirement, it's no wonder that economic migrants are desperate to get over the Channel! S'funny, your view of the 'picking and choosing' of which EU laws to adopt is just about the opposite of how I remember things. Admittedly going back a long time, but I remember Tony Blair squashing several measures that were designed to make life better for the average working man or woman. Can't argue with FC's points though, because that's all more recent and I've no idea what all the acronyms stand for :heehee:
As an aside, the problem here mostly stems from former colonials arriving in droves, as well as Eastern European illegals. Especially when they don't share the same religion, culture and values as the host country.

ERR I dont think I missed the point.
But I think you missed mine,
The point I was making is totally opposite to what you are saying, only a couple of years ago Merkel told all those "refugees" coming in the backdoor of Europe via the eastern end that they could come and will be welcome.

I doubt very much that most of them were able to support themselves.

As a result masses of them headed in over the borders on their way to Germany.
At that point the EU, well Germany, decided that all EU countries should take a quota.

I'm not sure of the outcome, but I think the UK said how many they were prepared to take, and what happened after that I must admit I dont know.

But this is the kind of meddling in our affairs that give the EU a bad name IMO.

I really do agree, the UK needs to tighten up its immigration laws, but it's all the wet politicians and "do gooders" that we have over here that shout racist at the first sign of any restrictions.

And yes I do agree, the UK does dodge EU employment laws whenever it can, which is the point I was making, that the EU come down hard on certain things, but when it comes to helping out the bloke in the street, they really dont care.

It was sad to see the american senators in ireland threatening the British peoples and stating they missed their good friend martin mcguinnes.

This brexit business has shown us who our true friends are and who our enemies are in reality.

Sorry to chime in here. We countries who try to do the right thing for the climate/land are lambasted and asked to take in more and more unfortunate human beings. I sympathise, however

Here in Canada, central heat in the winter is a must and electricity is too expensive to use so we use natural gas. Now, we are told that's not good enough because man made pollution from staying warm in the winter is not acceptable. So maybe, keeping the population here static would at least keep us more from being forced to use fossil fuels when it's cold so we won't harm the earth any more than our current or past level.

My province has already reduced our carbon footprint by 22%. And we paid dearly yet the "world" still call us dirty.

Sooooo, we don't need more polluters which the EU and others want us to support. We can hold the line on climate change. If only in our back yards if we are not forced to take in more humans. Would somebody please tell the EU to stop with their useless edicts. Please! I cannot imagine the nonsense the UK has tolerated. Stiff upper lip? No, there's a limit to the interference that one should tolerate!

              Rant over :)

                    Water cannons .
Make them wet and give them a good dowcing every hour day and night.
I'm sure they would move on eventually.
The sight of coppers carefully removing them is embarrassing.
If they have supergluded themselves to a bus dive it off I say.
Pity they don't have jobs to go to ,I bet most are professional protesters and turn up at any protests there are going.
