This is what I meant about root structure when using Jack's Magic and is within less than a week of previous potting on, with the plant dropped to the bottom of the larger pot:

Did anybody grow tomatoes from supermarkets' tomatoes? Put several seeds from sweet cherry plum tomato from Lidl, that all germinated very quickly. Ok, I know, of it's hybrid variety, then won't repeat. But still interesting :) Apart from them I already have 8 plants grown from named seeds.

I think @misterQ has. As you say, they're most likely to be F1 hybrids, and whenever I find a variety I wish to grow the seeds aren't available to the public.

But things may change as I saw a (440g?) jar of 'heirloom' tomato sauce going for £2.99 in Sainsburys a while ago, and if heirloom non-F1 tomatoes fetch a premium then useful seeds will become available.

Scrungee is indeed correct, I do grow from seeds collected from supermarket (Morrisons) bought tomatoes.

Last year's Morrisons "Grape" cherry tomatoes (ie sweet mini plum with a crunchy texture often sold loose or on the vine in a small, square translucent plastic box):

          [IMG] [IMG]

Most produced six ripened trusses of fruit each with a seventh-ish harvested green. The average size of each tomato was about 32mm length x 25mm diameter.

But, occasionally, the plants will produce two or three star cluster trusses of penny-sized fruit instead, like this:

This year, in addition to the Morrisons "Grape" cherry tomatoes, I am also trying the cheapest Morrisons Moneymaker-type tomatoes as well:

These are my spares. I don't feed and I don't pot up using intermediate sized pots - it's just the pot after pricking out then the final sized pot or directly into the ground.

Looking good, no surprise there ;) I might try some of that Jack’s Magic next year. I normally use B&Q MPC, but for the second year running I’ve been plagued by fungus gnats, and I’m suspecting the compost.

Been waiting for warmer nights and finally I've decided to plant mine in the greenhouse last weekend:
