WHATS LOOKING GOOD IN JUNE 2019

The two plants are about 15 foot apart! But the philadelphus is sheltered, as it’s tucked underneath the young walnut tree. The Deutzia is in a much more exposed position....

Thanks Sian. I've been watching a couple of other online nurseries over the last few months that have been out of stock, hopefully they will have more at some point.

 

We had six hebes we bought last year, in pots in the two planters either side of the tea-house steps. They did very well.
But were looking very sickly after I'd pruned them back a month ago. The problem is they don't get a lot of sun there. But that's where I want them.



But I repotted them with fresh growing on compost, two didn't survive and one is still on the sick list but I live in hope. One is at the end of the rockery and two are back in the planters with new hebes either side. The old ones have lots of buds on them, so I think I'm back in business.





I've stopped adding "stuff" to the former pool waterfall. What's there should eventually cover it and totally disguise its former purpose.




The roses on our new paved area where the koi pool once was, are becoming everything we wanted them to be.

I'm not 100% convinced that it is really 'Amistad' but it seems too early for 'Black Knight' or 'Purple Majesty'.

 

Whoever said you can't lift, divide and move peonies clearly doesn't know what they are talking about. If I can do it so can anyone. It please my wife because she thought that I had killed it. It was perfectly fine. It was just a bit later shooting than usual. As was to be expected really.

In a word no.

The pool was always only one element of our garden. I did have a few big fish in there at around 2ft in length, including a couple of nice sankes, but they were only a tenner each when I bought them and they came in a plastic bag in a box as they were quite small.









Some pay what I consider "silly money" for fish, I've never been that keen.


I've had the pool for thirty-three years and had considered giving it up before. I'll admit I was moore interested in it at one time.
For some their koi pool is their only interest, so might get withdrawal symptoms if they gave it up, I can understand that.

But apart from the pool and the garden, I've always had my leccy piano, my vintage audio equipment and my interest in film noir. Twenty years ago I got into golf and in the last ten to fifteen, my jukeboxes and tenor sax. So I'm always busy.

I've an open invitation to see my fish any time I choose, they're only two doors away, but I've not been bothered, although I might at some time in the future.

As an aspect, this,



doesn't look that different than this. So I'm quite at ease with the changes.



Since I got rid of the pool, the old filter room has become quite useful.
There wasn't room to swing a cat in there before. With a big pool filter, a 300 gall quarantine tank and its own 40 gallon filter.







After a make ove,r I now have this pleasant little room, with all mod-con. The koi equipment piled up in the corner has all since been sold.








I'm toying with idea of buying another vinyl jukebox and doing it up in here, but the jury's out on that at the moment, as I haven't broached the subject with "the war department."

We're in for a programme of a complete redecoration of the house, when we can make the effort of getting someone in to do it. Last time we went to stay with our son for six weeks. We might do the same again. He's since bought another house as a "holiday home" not far away, so accommodation isn't a problem.
If you always do the lot at the same time, then it all needs doing again at the same time. Such a mess!
We may also have to get my wife a stair lift. But everything is possible.

Long before I got interested in plants I dug up a peony and replanted it. Never knew it couldn’t be done!! Of course, they are as easy as any other plant to both move and divide

could do with a bit more colour at this time of year / earlier on the long border, its more planted up for July onwards with helenium - rudbeckia - kniphofia - sedums - penstemon garnet plus others , that border gets really hot later

 

A cornus (kousa var chinensis I think) that I planted in my mum's garden over 40 years ago.
