Avoiding the puddle

    I'm rather chuffed with this little rockery. After wet weather a puddle forms up against the patio (soil is waterlogged clay). I thought if I stuck a rockery on top it things may grow ok, the theory being that the even if the water is a foot beneath the surface, rockery plants aren't deep rooted so they won't know. The "foundation" is broken up breeze block forced into the wet clay, then some gravel, then the rockery. So far so good, but winter will be the proof of the pudding

        Not strictly true. In the wild alpine plants often have very long roots. It is only in gardens where they do not need to go searching for water and food that they do not always develop the root system needed to sustain them in their native habitats.

          Yes, good to point that out. It's too easy to forget that all garden plants have their origins in wild plants.
