I have a dumb question about walls and which way they face.

Here is a little plan of my house and the compass points.

The coloured areas represents raised flower beds, which are mostly built against walls and fences.

Are the flower beds marked in green considered be to on a north-facing wall because they back on to a wall to the north? Or is this a south-facing wall if I stand with my back to the wall, I am facing south?

Likewise, is the bed marked in red north-facing or south-facing?

Are the blue and yellow beds considered to be on east or west-facing walls?

Google can't help with such a dumb question ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Green is south facing, red north facing, yellow and blue west facing.

If you stood in the green you would be facing toward the sun.

Be the wall. :) The face of the wall is the bit going outwards, or the way you're facing if you stand with your back to it. So the front of your house faces west, and the back faces east. And the same is true for garden walls.

Thanks everyone! I'm beginning to understand why the plants I put by the north-facing wall aren't very happy!

Sun loving plants go in the green. Shade loving plants go in the red.

Ps my house's orientation is very similar to yours. The extreme left of my red patch is in constant sun. There I have planted my lavender.

“The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask”

It’s how we learn, and if you’ve thought it, unless you are Einstein, someone else will be thinking it too, and breathing a sigh of relief, and a silent “thank You!” right now...
