Well if gobby and the rest of those that seem to spend most of their time hanging around Westminster do shift work they must live pretty close by and they must have things they need to do at home.

 

Just wondering what the melting point of steel is?
Buckled rails?
Sagging overhead cables.
Leaves on the line.
Wrong kind of snow.
The list goes on
I wonder what kind of weather the railways are actually prepared for?

 

Hi Pete. Two great minds etc. Yes we can all laugh at our railway system. Wet rails, leaves on the line etc. At one tome the rails were joined by using fish plates. These wer steel plates that slotted between the upper and lower part of the rail. Due to my basic knowledge of expansion and retraction, I could never undersatnd why the fish plates were securely bolted as they were. Although the upper suface of the rail was gapped, perhaps to allow for expnsion, however might this have been void due to the f/plate bolts being so tightend, rather than perhaps having one rail with fixed bolts and the connecting rail having slotted holes, thus allowing room for expansion. Then along comes some bright spark and all systems change. Now the rails are welded.. Scuse me but what a prat. The rails expand and they cant so they buckle.

 

I was under the impression that rails, although not joined in the old fashioned way, still allowed for expansion and contraction.
They must do, which is why I can't work out why they buckle.

 

This is a common problem here because we go from -40f to +95f and more. There is a section of a north south Ontario line that slows down through many sections, to a crawl and the cars rock and roll.

Same thing out west.

These are also generally freight lines. Passenger trains must give way to freight and an 800 mile trip can take 22 hours!

Once the trains get past Washago they then can make up time because the tracks up north of there run through a lot of rocky area and they are secured at shorter intervals with more expansion gaps.

I might try the trek on the train one time.

 

Over here an 80 mile trip often takes 22 hours

 

I'm proud to live in Kent, the garden of England. Now my daughter bought four dark Red Apples from M&S, these were from the USA. Yes these Apples like very nice, just a shame we can't grow something like this in the UK.

 

You probably can, but not commercially, there are hundreds of apple varieties that you can grow in your own garden, but some of the ones you buy from abroad, in supermarkets, are often not suitable for our climate on a large scale.

Good example the NZ apple "pink lady", is over here known as cripps pink, but it really likes a warmer climate.
So I'm told by my apple growing mate.

The new laptop (in stock) I wanted was in stock but they wanted a further £40 because it had been "set up", what does that mean? I said NO and ordered an un set up model at the advertised price!

I started work in I.T in 1973, spent 30 odd years doing it so probably better qualified to spend a few minutes setting up a laptop?

 

It is called Pink Lady here, a lovely crisp apple.

 

Pink Lady is a registered name that can only be used by NZ growers.
Variety, Cripps pink.

A bit like Jersey Royal spuds.
Variety, International kidney.

 

Guess ours come from NZ then. Whatever store, Aldi, Apolonia, Continente they are Pink Lady.
