I promised my little daughter the opportunity to go Swimming today because she has not been for a while due to the fact that we live in a village and the nearest Pool is a 10 minute drive away. So, this morning she woke up very excited and got her gear ready before coming down for breakfast.

We jumled into the car and firstly, I checked that we had enough petrol to get there and back, which we had so, I went to start the car but, it wouldn't start :(. I spent about 5 minutes frantically trying but the engine just cranked continously, my daughter was contstantally asking, "what is that noise our car is making (She was meaning the cranking)"? I then had to tell my daughter that, unfortunately we would have to postpone until another day due to the car not starting but she just cried and said, "I hate our car, it always breaks when we want to do something".

I did not know what else to say that would have made her feel any better so, any ideas?

        Agree with lolimac.

You should have walked or cycled there instead.

If the journey was long and arduous then all the better because, the next time, you could say let's not go and she will understand why.

As it stands, appease her with her favourite food.

Good afternoon as I don't know your circumstances would it have been possible that you could have left the car and either walked or used public transport, you certainly don't need to appease her or make her feel better.you should have told her when she said she hates the car, that you hate it more than she does and that you were just as disappointed ;)

Sorry that not a pleasant experience, especially in this hot weather. Good advice from others, in the meantime you obviously need to get your car sorted. Are you with a breakdown service like the AA/RAC with 'at home' cover?

Just out of curiosity, what should I have told her when she was asking why the car was making a strange noise?

Ehh, just tell her the car is broke, if its to far to walk, well you can go another time.
Kids need to find out life is not always easy.
Otherwise it will come as a complete shock to her in a few years time.

@Gardening Guru I wouldn't attempt to start the car again as it may be cam belt failure. If this is so you will damage the engine. It would be best if a mechanic checks it over.
