    I see your point @ARMANDII .

...but as I’ve been saying for years (has it already been that long since the pre-Referendum debates?) the EU is still, first and foremost, a trade body. So EU borders are trade borders, customs borders. This is the only way to make sure that rules for example animal welfare can be maintained. So there will need to be customs checks, unless the same standards/rules/product descriptions are upheld. Hence the backstop...

To be honest, I wonder if you loose sleep most nights, wondering if you are about to loose your home? Your business? Your savings? Sorry, during the day I try not to think too much about it - I have to keep functioning, and tears don’t help. I’ll keep quiet...

Hi Sian, well, I don't think many people are worried about losing their homes, business, savings etc. Banks operate their investments mostly in Dollars as most large commercial organisations to, true some businesses, on both sides, will be affected and there will be job losses but not on a castastrophic basis as Poiticians would have you believe.......we call it Campaign Fear.

If that were true, Sian, the UK would not be leaving:dunno: If it were first and foremost a trade body then other member countries could decide, with their own free will, to leave the EU should they wish to, and that as they have found out is not the case. What trade borders in the EU there are few and far between but the EU Club has set standards, good and bad, for all those members in the Club. That is not what is being said, what is being said is that, like it or not, European countries will, and are, losing their own Nationality, independent political power, sovereignty, while being merged by an unelected political body into a Federation totally controlled by it...........another Empire that will become politically top heavy, hugely bureaucratic. slow to react to the needs of it's members and making things needlessly complicated with overwhelming officialdom.
The East European Countries are not happy with the attempts of the EU to control them and tend to ignore several of the EU's poltical and trading demands, while the Mediterranean members are only staying in the EU because of the threats of their huge debts to the EU bringing them to financial bankruptcy should they try........so they are held unwilling hostages.

That, Sian, is the very last thing you should do.:dunno::nonofinger: We're not the EU saying "I'm right and you're wrong and you will do as I say". I'm just a member of GC expressing his own opinion/ When members stop exchanging opinions and views then GC will be a poorer place.......and it's not what we do.:dunno: Your opinions are important, necessary and well respected.:love30::)

Well, I am! My right to live here is as an EU citizen. My right to own a property here is as an EU citizen. My right to run a business here is as an EU citizen.... There are over a million people in the same position as me, living in the EU. We are uncertain of our future, our right to remain living here. Many of us did not even have a vote in the referendum. We are considered British enough to pay taxes in the UK, but not enough to vote. Meanwhile foreign students, studying in British universities, were able to vote. That’s UK law, not EU law - but I digress...
Then there are those EU citizens living in the UK, who are constantly hearing from their friends “we don’t mean you, of course, but...”. They are packing up, leaving, going home - ask any labour-intensive farmer, or hospital...

There are none - that’s the whole point!! The borders are around the EU as a whole. Hence the Blue channel at airports, etc. Eurotunnel is going to be interesting, come November...

Umm, no. That may be what is being said... but .... That’s not happening. I can give you a hands-on, embedded-reporter from an EU-27 country report, to tell you that is not happening.

Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Cezch Republic, Romania do not recognise the schegen agreement of the EU and maintain their borde, they also are in dispute over trade standards with the EU, Sian.:dunno:

That is an open, public, statement of the EU's Federation policy so it cannot be denied:dunno:, Sian, and it's desire to form a EU Armed Forces formed by contributions from EU members. The fact that, according to a reporter, it is not happening now does not alter the fact that is what the EU has openly stated that that is what it intends to do. The UK does not want to be a unwilling member inan future EU Federation and as a result lose it's national identity, sovereignty, and poltiical independence
That I understand and genuinely sympathise with,Sian, but are you really asking the 66.4 million people in the UK to put those who saw a brighter future for themselves in the EU before their own Nation's future? If the EU is everything you thought and wanted it to be, surely it will give a fair deal to those Brit's who are living in the EU and contributing to it's business and taxes??

That is a very much discussed and recognised issue in the UK, Sian. The UK Government has been meeting with the EU and has said it needs those EU citizens and recognises the need to protect their rights and has no desire to retract them, it's a question of trust, I guess. On my part I wish they would stay and live in the UK, working and contributing as they always have. Why don't you trust the EU do declare that they will protect ex-Brit's businesses, and their rights??, or are you afraid they will not do, what the UK has said it will do i.e: protect EU citizenS rights if the EU will agree to do the same for ex-Brit's. It takes two to Tango, even politically, but so far the EU seems to want to dance while telling the UK to sit quietly. We have been willingly to play fair and recognise the rights and needs of EU citizens, but the stiff, unbending attitude of the EU seems to put rules before compassion and Humanity.

I dont think its simple, I might come across as a bit simple some times:biggrin:, but this aint.

Yes I can see how it might affect you, and I hope it doesn't to any great degree.
But a lot of that is down to the EU as well, they can make a deal, if they really want to.;)

I was really trying to say that apparently the default situation is we leave the EU on 31st Oct, that is unless Bo Jo goes on bended knee and asks for yet another pointless extension, which I have no doubt the EU would grant.

But if Bo Jo doesn't, the Brit government has said they will not put a hard border in across Ireland, the only ones saying they will is the EU, as far as I know:scratch:

I wasn’t having a go at you @pete honest! If you look, I said “simples!”, not “simple” (what I love about the series of meerkat adverts is that the word “simples” is used where things should be simple, but life/the market/politicians have conspired to make it exceedingly complicated. Oops - about to wander into another advertising mine field!!).
It will/has already affected us - in the not-knowing for 3 years as much as anything. How severely is yet to be discovered.

Of course BoJo isn’t going to worry about higher-standard goods coming across the border, in the same way as Mexico isn’t worrying about an influx of Americans. (Not saying that Americans are of higher-standard in any way to Mexicans - quick disclaimer added, as two Leffes mean I can’t find a better example). The “quality” trade is in the other direction... The EU don’t want the Irish border to be where substandard goods come across a weak border, probably being dropped into Northern Ireland for the sole purpose of getting onto the European market.

No, I didn't think you was having a go at me, but I do look at things mostly from my angle, but then I think we all do.
                Meerkats, I love them.

But as far as I know the Eastern end of the EU borders are leaking like a sieve, but not something I know much about, there was an awful lot of human traffic some time ago, mostly heading to Germany, thank you Mrs Merkel.

But I really do think the EU are just being downright awkward, and using the Irish border as a stick to bash us with, instead of trying to come to a proper negotiated agreement.
The Irish PM is no help whatsoever, but then, why should he be.
Apart from the fact we bailed them out when they went broke trying to keep up with the Euro.;)

Why oh why don’t our politicians give Boris a chance? Tying his hands just as they did with Theresa May. And the Libdems!!! ....what hypocritical opportunists they are. Cable kept saying he respected the referendum yet campaigns for a re run!! They hope we will forget their disastrous role in government not so long ago
The EU recognises we are divided and that Boris is prob bluffing.
Politicians are the most disingenuous self serving collection of twerps and we deserve so much better

Yep agree, they are lining up to thwart Boris, they always will.
Was not a fan of Boris but he needs to be backed up by our lot, but they are still going for a no Brexit, regardless of what any of the snakes say.

Perhaps a bit off course. I have just listened to the Labour second in command, Donnell. I may be mistaken but, somehow much of his dialogue seems to be Communistic.

A lot of the blame needs to be laid at Camerons doorstep. He was so cocksure we would vote remain that he made no plans for leaving. Theresa May was dropped right in the mire by him, but did her best to sort it out. When it comes down to it the UK spends MORE in Europe than Europe spends in the UK. So No Deal will be to our advantage.

Hi Dai, agree to most of that. Cameron made the manifesto pledge to keep himself into office so was obliged to hold the ref but so completely and utterly short sighted and moronic to rest on his laurels at that point. Don't agree that TM was dropped in it as she campaigned for the job and wanted to do it but I guess she did what she thought was right by her lights. It's a pity that most people's opinion is that she was shockingly bad!
The end is in sight boys and girls! [I reserve the right to be wrong about this lol]
