Mostly cloudy again:wallbanging::gaah:, with the cloud cover being very smooth and a light grey. The breeze has vanished, and we've only had a short period of light rain (0.6mm) this morning. So right now the temperature is 63f with a pressure reading of 989hpa:coffee::)

My little French barometer measures in millibars and says it's 76.5 millibars at the moment. No longer gale force but pretty lively but a lot cooler than yesterday.
Please @ARMANDII what's the pressure reading in hpa?
        Jenny

Hi Jenny, since I know you live at sea level the following applies

Standard air pressure at standard elevation (sea level) at 15°C and 45° latitude is 1013 hPa or 29.92 inches of mercury. Most dial type barometers employ an airpressure sensor with a limited range of sensitivity.

So air pressure will differ between heights and temperature and so, because of the combination of height and temperature can differ, for that area, greatly, which is why the Met Offices past practice of just issuing sea level pressure for the whole of the National was inaccurate. I talk in "old talk" when it comes to measurement as I get a proper sense of what they mean. Fahrenheit is far more definitive than Centigrade which seems too "general".

But I don't think your barometer is talking in millibars for air pressure, but what you're reading is the temperature Fahrenheit. So my temperature reading is always in Fahrenheit which is 63.f and your of 76.5 is in Fahrenheit and we have a difference of 13.5f.

So Air Pressure conversion is easy. 1000 hPa are equal to 1000mbar, which is equal to 750 mm of mercury in a barometric column, which is 0.987 of the average atmospheric pressure, which on global average is 1013 millibars orhectopascals.

Hi Jenny, I have an old French Barometer given to me by my sister a long time ago......
                upload_2019-8-11_14-17-34.png

and I had to go into the Kitchen to look at the dial as it is less referred to than it should be:love30::dunno::heehee:, and it was given to me in a poor state so that I could restore it.

Right, firstly, your Baromenter seems only to have one needle (whereas mine has two needles, (one to read air pressure and the other to read the temperature), although your Barometer face has scales for both air pressure and temperature which means, in all probability, the temperature needle has been removed at some stage of the Barometer's life and I believe the remaining needle is indicatiing the air pressure. So, obviously, the one needle is showing Variable.

Had some heavy showers and a gentle breeze, still could get more showers.

                    Hi,

Just a drop of rain blowing in the stiff breeze today so it's Gales day to play out; I've been up the mountain again giving weeds a hard time; I'd forgotten I'd planted a ground cover conifer and spotted it under the wild flowers so have relocated it. Soots my very friendly black cat has been with me all the time I've been in the garden; she just beams down and must belong to a house higher up; I never see her approach and never know she's with me until my trouser legs inform me; she loves my company but I can understand that. :yahoo:

This morning I spent in the workshop with a very early start so I've enjoyed all day yesterday and this morning completing the new TIG welding trolley; I'm fully retired but getting workshop time is challenging due to the many jobs which need keeping on top of around home.

Hopefully I'll soon be playing with the TIG welder;Bron and I are having a trip out to collect aluminium sheet tomorrow; I sure know how to enjoy life. :dbgrtmb:

                    Kind regards, Colin.

New TIG welder tucks in nicely and will soon be in service; a nice addition to my workshop and opens up an whole new world to play in without Blackie or Gale upsetting me.

The new welding trolley completed this morning made from mostly offcuts I had to hand.

Hold that thought, Jenny!!!. A little research shows me that the French from around the 18th Century says that they made Barometers of several types, one to show air pressure in millibars only, one to show air pressure in Mercury Inches, one only to show air pressure in milliibars and temperature, and one to show air pressure in Mercury inches and temperature.
So, I stand corrected, your Baromenter with the one finger is indicating the air pressure in Mercury inches and not millibars only while at the same time indication the general state of the weather.

Inches-Millibars Pressure Converter. To convert millibars to inches of mercury, multiply the millibar value by 0.0295301. Click anywhere out of the field for calculation

Your barometer being French is in CM of mercury, it has nothing to do with temperature.
There should be a screw at the back where you can set it to the correct air pressure, you can get a reading off the weather forecast or look at a weather chart with isobars on it, set it to the one closest to you at that particular time.
They are a bit like contour lines on an ordnance survey map and give the air pressure at any given time along the length of the line.

Been a bit mixed here, heavy shower this morning, but dry since then, hovering around the 20C mark, so not much like mid august.
                          Still pretty windy also.

Agreed. pete. but mine also shows temperature as well as mercury inch and, as I said, the French made different types for different demands. I believe the National Museum and the Manchester Museum have all 4 types on display, the ones in Manchester belonged to the Duke of Wellington.:dunno::coffee:

so - nothing to do with inches- so the chart in picture 3 isn't relevant. I'm none the wiser.
so what's this in French CMS?
Iv'e just checked the pressure on the BBC weather map for Battle:

Ok, so the first barometers were over 3 ft long and used mercury to move the dial, they measure air pressure, and one atmosphere is roughly 14.7lbs per square inch.
Which equals one Bar. Sorry just getting that off my chest:biggrin:
Hence MBS, milli bars, ie 1000 is average.

The chart in pic three is a conversion chart, Inches, to MBS, to MM, 10MM to one CM.;)

If you look on your chart 1012 mbs equals roughly just below 76.2CM or 762 mm.

So your barometer should be reading somewhere in that area, I see it is on 76.4 cm so its reading slightly high, but not enough to worry about.
