I love Christmas! Not the religious stuff as I don't cheer for any team and let my ethics guide me but I really like Christmas cake, trays of cookies and sweets. Getting together with friends and family and being thrilled that last year's hose hasn't yet got a ladder and I can wear it one more time.

I like a white Christmas. Snow stacked up and and birds using the feeder pretty much non stop. And a lovely wood fire crackling on a cold evening.

That said, these days of 78f are my favourite but I would very much miss our seasons!

I share your woe Upsy.....Yule be devastated!
True, old santa did get his clause into too many sugary mince peas...proved to be his downfall
Me? Yes, I guess eating carrots all summer has helped me keep my toothy pegs:)
I’m flattered you think I could replace such an old, fat, lazy (well he only works one day a year) fella but let’s give him his grieving time before we decide on his replacement :noidea:

Yes, there is woe at Christmas. The fictitious Santa may be dead to some here although he is alive and well to those under 7 or 8 years old but I think about those who truly were here and aren't anymore. Christmas is a time to share a yule style meal and celebrate with our friends but also to reflect on the grest relationships of those now gone. And the forum friends who will be missed.

Sorry to be a wet blanket but I never joke about dead people, fictitious or not.

Christmas is a gift to us gardeners. It gives us something to scurry around preparing for and keeps us busy between digging, weeding and watering. Then on boxing day, we start our kelsaes ;)

Loads of stores are already clearing out gardening, outdoor toys, BBQs and camping stuff. Summer is over. Back to School/Uni, Halloween, De-icer/snowshovels, Xmas (and Easter) are here. Nowhere appears to be stocking their shelves with Brexit party gear

P.S. Our local National Trust property started taking Xmas period bookings 3 months ago.

Don't worry, Verdun got the wrong idea from the Fake News tweets that are around.

Santa is alive and well but has retired and wishes to let a younger person take over. I think Verdun may apply for the job.

I received this missive from Santa with his explanation of why he has decided to retire. He may have imbibed just a little too much before penning it. So apologies for his language. :noidea:

              Santa is Quitting

              T'was the night before Christmas,
              Old Santa was pissed
He cussed out the elves and threw down his list
Miserable little brats, ungrateful little jerks,
I have a good mind to scrap the whole works
I've busted my ass for damn near a year
Instead of "Thanks Santa" what do I hear?

The old lady bitches cause I work late at night
The elves want more money - the reindeer all fight
Rudolph got drunk and goosed all the maids
Donner is pregnant and Blitzen has AIDS

And just when I thought that things would get better
Those assholes from the Revenue sent me a letter
They say I owe taxes - if that ain't damn funny
Who the hell ever sent Santa Claus money?

And the kids these days - they all are the pits
They want the impossible ...Those mean little shits
I spent a whole year making wagons and sleds
Assembling dolls...Their arms, legs and heads
I made a ton of yo yo's - No request for them
They want computers and robots...Am I IBM?

Flying through the air...dodging the trees
Falling down chimneys and skinning my knees
I'm quitting this job...there's just no enjoyment
I'll sit on my fat ass and draw unemployment
There's no Christmas this year...now you know the reason
I found me a blonde.. I'm going SOUTH for the season!!

                  Love it @shiney !!!!!:roflol:

I understand completely @CanadianLori ....honestly. We've lost 2 family members this year , and of course my dear Mum is for ever in our thoughts too , makes it even more poignant that her birthday is just before Christmas.
I started this thread because of an email I received, sorry if I have sounded disrespectful , esp on hearing the sad news of a forum member, apologies to all.

What a load of bah humbugs you are:sad: I'm with Lori and love Christmas - family time and getting together with friends. Lighting up the house, gathering foliage for Christmas garlands and making the cake are all fun and enjoyable - special food and drink mmmm.
The lull after Christmas is a time for reflection and planning for the coming year. Time to relax by doing a jigsaw, playing board games with the grandchildren (they love monopoly). Wrapping up warm for winter walks along the beach or sitting in the light of the Christmas tree enjoying a tipple. What's not to like?
I wish you all have a warm and meaningful Christmas or as they say in the US Happy Holidays.

It was only a jokey thread @alana , I can only speak for myself....I love Christmas!!

Don't go overboard with the food as none of the family are keen on the richer food, but we do have plenty of nice treats and nibbles!! The best part is seeing our 'boy's and giving them a real hug instead of the virtual ones! And my 2yr old great nephews have now brought back the excitement of Santa too ....special times indeed.:)

Our family is very pragmatic and Santa has always been a lovely fairytale enjoyed both by kids and adults. It's just a game of sorts, we never thought to pretend it was real. That would have felt like cheating or abusing childrens' lesser experience of reality.

Just like "where do babies come from" (when the question arose, I took a paper and pen and drew illustrations of human reproductive system and explained about the baby seed getting fertilised and slowly growing in the womb... this massively backfired as we were living in a Catholic country at the time and the Nun running the religion lessons at the nursery school pulled me to one side and asked me to be a tad more delicate on the subject with 4 years olds. Dutifully, when questioned about the fact by other children I changed the tack to explaining that children come from Ikea's "child department", where you can choose just the right one for you. My own child at that point used to wink and silently mouth ovaries :heehee:)

But back to the point, this is why I love this forum. We are a collection of very different kinds of people, and sometimes jokes made innocently can offend somebody- but this doesn't cause negativity nor bitching, we just explain our different points of view and remain nice, accepting the differences. I wish real life were more like this [IMG]

I'm sure it was not meant to be disrespectful. It's just that recent post about a member dying, which had published less than an hour before this one, made me feel the thread was ill timed. I guess over here we might be a tad more sensitive to things juxtaposed in this manner. Sorry for the criticism.:noidea:
