Well, I must admit, Verdun, I don't have any in my garden, but that is because they are mostly not good for Bees or Insects as they don't provide pollen. But I do disagree that they are over rated, and that flowering is brief and the habit ungainly. Lots of Gardeners love and grow them, in fact, one of my friends grows only Chrysanthemums and his garden attracts many visitors. It's all a matter of personal taste as it is with all plants in our gardens and thank the Lord for that.:love30::love30::dunno::heehee:

Yesterday saw a lot done in the garden but still no mowing as it hasn't grown in the drought. A light tidy up to 150ft of privet hedge, a good cutting of 100ft of laurel, a 10ft high and 6ft diameter Euonymous very hard pruned (now 6ft x 4ft) to see whether it will get rid of Euonymous Scale, cutting back of 600sq ft of Stachys, Lychnis and Verbascum and ground lightly dug (all done by Lewis who comes in to do the heavy work - next visit in four weeks :blue thumb:).

Whilst he spent all day doing that I spent short stints of sorting the edibles. 45 minutes picking runner and French beans, then a cuppa, 90 minutes picking blackberries and plums, then cuppa, 90 minutes picking up windfall apples and pears and plums., then another cuppa.

All the pears, about 20lb, were laid out on an empty compost heap together with about 15lb of rotting apples and about 10lb of rotting plums so that the birds, bees/wasps and butterflies could have a feast. The butterflies love the plums but ignore everything else. Bees/wasps only go for really rotten fruit but don't seem to touch the apples. Mainly blackbirds, ably assisted by crows, seem to prefer the apples.

42lbs of windfall apples (only slightly bruised) were bagged and went for donations to charity and £10 raised, plus another £10 for beans. :dbgrtmb:

Mrs Shiney filled two wheelie bins with cutting back plants and the rest of the cuttings (above) have made another 7ft high bonfire heap. :blue thumb:

Must get out and do some watering this morning. The rain we had been promised never materialised.

Have been tidying up the borders and cut back the achillea which had gone from a lovely pink to a grotty brown. Also been dead heading echinaceas (I've got far too many). Emptied a few of the pots against the front of the house ready for bulbs and more winter planting to go in. Not decided yet but might keep it as a mix of white and black tones.

I think I may take out the nicotiana today - it's just absolutely huge and looking a bit ugly now. I've already saved a load seeds from them.

Firstly though - time for a cuppa and feed the fish and a wander round in my dressing gown.

Lovely day after a damp night :)

Spent much of the morning consoling a neighbour .....her husband died this morning. He was a fixture here, I thought. A strong man in his day but increasingly ....embarrassingly for him I think .....he needed my help for various tasks. A character in the area. Sad loss.

Will get an idea later of size of new pond to put in. A cuppa in hand ....poss a lager....will help with the inspiration (after all, it will be the most beautiful pond in the world:hapfeet:)

Cut off the remaining tomato foliage. Fully expect green toms to fruit within 2 weeks. Removing foliage gradually during the mid to late summer is something I will continue with now and recommend it. :)

Next year I will grow GD, Sweet Petite and Sweet Million as the sweetest cherries.....unless someone can suggest better!?:)

Had a trip to two garden centres today. Bought some bulbs and a few heathers and a couple of trays of violas for the front pots. Came back, it starting pouring down and was really windy. Suns come out and just managed to do all the pots at the front. Looking nice and neat again. It's starting to feel very autumnal out there.

We went away for an elongated bank holiday weekend to Amsterdam, where the street-temperature was 37 degrees at one point :yikes::yikes:, which sadly curtailed my plans to visit the botanical garden there. Luckily a reliable friend was on cat/chicken-feeding and watering duty so the garden hasn't suffered too much. The only real casualty sadly looks like it might be my little monkey puzzle tree, which is suddenly looking very pale and droopy  It's only a foot or so tall but it's been growing amazingly for the last 12 months so I'm hoping some TLC will pull it back...:fingers crossed:

I have michaelmas daisies which i give the Chelsea chop but i was a few weeks late doing it. It stops them from getting too tall and makes the flowering later, which is some late flowers for the bees.

My condolences to your neighbour @Verdun.

Managed to get half of my Dad's garden weeded and dead headed. The bin men came while I was there so I had a lovely empty bin all to myself!!

Had a few jobs inside to do as well so will do the other half of the garden next time.

I noticed a lot of Peony seed heads...are they easy to germinate and grow? I have a feeling I heard somewhere that they are slow to get going.
