I had a lovely 3 year old magnolia tree that had been fully staked and supported and some horrific winds snapped the tree and pulled the supports out.

I appears it snapped at the base and started to regrow. Any ideas what it might be? I assume the magnolia had been grafted as the leaves are nothing like the magnolia.

It would have been grafted on to another Magnolia sp.
One that is common , easy to grow from seed.

According to www ...."When grafting a magnolia, the best rootstock to use would be a Magnolia acuminata.
But that may not be the case in your one.

I can rule out Magnolia grandiflora.

To id from leaves is possible but hard. Needs a lot of research...which is why I went no further.

Note the mystery Magnolia leaf on back has beautiful loped veins at the edges. (No idea of proper botanical wording for this!)

Don't think it can be Magnolia macrophylla...not seeing silver, grey underside/
        Veins at edges different.
        Quote www...

"These leaves are bright green above with a fuzzy, silver/grey underside, creating a beautiful, two-toned effect with each passing breeze."

Pic.....Leaf to right is Magnolia macrophylla showing silver.

@Snorky85 - whatever it is, I think the foliage is lovely. Even if it is one of those magnolia that take a lifetime to flower, it looks as though it will be a great foliage plant!

Thanks everyone for all the really interesting information. You are right-it is lovely whatever magnolia it ends up being. I was absolutely gutted when the other one snapped in the wind-Id planted it in memory of my little chinchilla who died.

Will definitely keep all updated. It’s up at mums in lincoln (bit colder up there) so will be interesting to see how it copes in the winter weather.
