Quite agree my friend. However it is perhaps more of an necessity with trees and shrubs grown in the average garden. So often the wrong tree is in the wrong garden etc. I physically shudder and tremble when seeing trees and shrubs being blindly and cruely hacked and chopped about.

We have got quite a lot done in the last week. Large shrubs either pruned or removed (things get out of hand quite quickly in our garden), loads of violets and Pulmonaria dug out (two wheelie bins full), hedges cut, eight lawns cut (ranging form 30sq ft to 2,500sq ft), lots of apples picked and sold for charity (and for our apple crumbles :)) and about 100lb of windfalls given to friends.

The last 2lb of runner beans were picked yesterday and the last of the courgettes are coming along.

When I got home last night at 11.30 I then moved some heavy pots of tender plants under cover as there was a frost forming.

I've also sold some more Foxgloves and some Wisteria and have some orders for more Wisteria. :blue thumb:

      More mowing today. :phew:

Pulled up the pot marigolds from around the path, it's surprising how many bags they fill. I won't put them in the compost bin because they have mildew.
Cut off some of the lavender flowers that are hanging over the path so that i can plant the wallflowers.

Did a lot of weeding around the path but haven't finished it, it started to rain and i thought that it will be a good opportunity to wash my hair.

I've just arrived home after a week in Devon. The garden has fared quite well but, as usual, there's lots to do. Maybe over the weekend I'll feel like starting but after a five hour drive and a week of visiting gardens I don't have the inclination to do anything.

Which gardens have you been visiting @alana ?

Not done much today , wet through this morning good job I mowed last night, so ventured into the GH to have a browse. It did eventually stop raining and brightened up so thought I would go and do one of the neighbours hedges, it suddenly went dark and lashed it down again :wallbanging:. I did mange to take some pic of the fading garden with the exception of some, I'll put some pics on later.

All this wet weather has saturated my Cacti

                upload_2019-10-4_15-53-17.png

collection and with the threat/promise of more rain over the weekend I decided to move them into the Green House. The table is an old metal Aquarium table which is getting on for around 25 years old but has stood the test of time by sitting outside for around 10 years, The wooden top composes of two short sections from a scaffolding plank that I used to build the Iris two tiered bench so nothing has gone to waste, and the table was easy to dismantle and move to the Green House. Moving the Cacti required thick leather gardening gloves and I got away without getting stabbed or pricked by the different Cacti:yes:, and now they can dry out for a while.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Tidied up a bit in the greenhouse and then carried on tidying up and getting ready for winter outside. Dead heading, remove dead/tatty annuals, pruning a few things outgrowing their space, weeding and harvesting seed and crops as I come across them.

@Perki - On the way down to Devon I called in at Wisley and down there I visited Barrington Court and Lytes Cary both National Trust properties.

Today I decided to bite the bullet and take out my cucumber and melon plants to make way for some of the tender plants for winter. The cucumber was still flowering but the plant was slowing down.
Melon and cucumber took up this area before I set about removing them.

This afternoon I managed to get a couple more hours in cutting the paddock hedge. Another afternoon and the hedge will be done.

Next year I wont be growing melons and will grow cucumbers up a frame rather than on the floor.

Cleared out the finished runner beans, dug over and prepared for garlic. Sowed broad bean seeds, planted freesias to flower next spring. Dug over patch where there was a Daphne odorata until it died last spring, now need to replace with something needs to be wind resistant as site is exposed to cold easterly winds. Sowed grass seed on bare patch; which had had a bulk bag of gravel on it until a few weeks ago.

Planted out some of the polyanthus, dug up some that had died down during the summer and was starting to grow but wouldn't be good enough to leave there so potted them up to see if they'll build up for next year. Tomorrow and Tuesday will be raining, so won't be doing anything in the garden until Wednesday.

Theo the baby mouse passed away whilst we were away . I think he was a runty baby but not totally sure. I did read that runts are unlikely to survive but I had to try. Chippy, the guinea pig also died :cry3: - he and the buns were at a boarding hotel for buns and pigs. Amber and Sebastian were very stressed there and have returned home quite literally shadows of their former selves. Amber is the worst, thin to the point of emaciated. Feeling very quilty about it all.

I grew Emir and had about 6 melons off the plant. All tasted great but it took up a lot of space for the yield so I'll not grow again. I sowed them in March in the prop.
