    Hi all,
    I moved home and finally have a tiny bit of a garden. Always loved plants, but only had them on a balcony and indoors, so know close to nothing about gardening (apart from a childhood knowledge but that was about vegetables... whereas now I'm interested in flowers/shrubs).
    I am over excited as finally got myself a bit of playground :) I don't care about furniture shopping for the new home, the garden and wildlife / birds ideas have a total priority.
    I will soon be posting questions as now preparing for bulb planting and have no idea how to prepare plants for winter and so on and on...
    Bought some books and browsing net, but need some hands-on advice :)

        I see you are in Surrey, so wonder if you are near me? I am in Ashford, near Staines. If so, I'd imagine that you would have similar soil type and climate to me.

        Your dahlias in your photo look lovely - far better than mine were this year :)

        It doesn't matter how big or small our patch is. As gardeners it's how we make it our own that does with the plants we choose to grow.

            Oh, they were not grown by me! The photo contains the rose which was here, dahlias and cosmos are from the shop and calathea and geraniums are brought from my previous home.
            The poor dahlias were badly damaged by slugs and snails... (and one dahlia completely destroyed by some animal eventually). I was not watching them daily until quite a big damage was done. :(

                  Sowed wildflower seeds in summer (doesn't look very promising yet, but I'll be patient).

                  Next done: bulb planting in containers, what a project it was :)
                  I hope I did it right and will store them in a shed to protect from rain and squirrels.
                  Should I put a bubble wrap around pots to protect from frost?

                  I don't understand how I can create lasagne method with tulips in a container since tulips need to be planted in November only...? I want to combine them with crocus etc.

                  Next to do: plant iris in the garden.
                  And then in November plant tulips.

                  Hi Elle, don't follow the "Rules" rigidly and try a bit of experimenting with all kinds of bulbs. My borders have around 4 layers of different bulbs in them so I get them coming up at different times giving me colour for a longer period. I have pots that also have mixtures of bulbs in them, some new bulbs and some that are old bulbs from other pots. Try online and you'll find Parkers have different kinds of Crocus on sale now so you can mix what bulbs you want. I usually plant Tulips, in pots, in layers of different colours and flowering times to get the most of them, but always mix in other varieties of bulbs in layers with them.

                  If you covered the bulbs in the pots with compost, Elle........then you did it right:heehee:
                  Regarding covering the sides of the pots that would depend on whether or not you get hard frost or prolonged periods of frost. I haven't had a frost of any severity for around 10 or more years and I live in West Cheshire so, I think, living only 30 miles from the West Coast with Ireland blocking most of the Atlantic weather, whereas you're "doawn Sarth" in Surry where you seem to get harsher weather during the Winter than us "uoop Narth":dunno: It also depends on what bulbs they are. Perhaps some of of the GC Gang, living in the South:love30:, can advise you better than someone in Cheshire
