Gave the grass what probably is it's last cut this year. Failed to clean the mower properly so it will again stew in the damp cuttings over the winter unless Boxing day turns out to be boring. I certainly keep the lawnmower makers happy. :dunno:

Ripped out the tomato plants. Last weekend we collected the last harvest of the mini plum and cherry tomatoes, roasted them with herbs and garlic and preserved in olive oil. It was a lovely weekend, I was nipping out to snip some rosemary, thyme and marjoram and sterilising the jars whilst the Teenager was putting finishing touches to the pear cake and preparing her roasted pumpkin latte... "Quick, call the Good Housekeeping magazine" :heehee:

There's so much to do now, bulbs to plant and Dahlias to dig up. I wish my job didn't take all the juices out of me, it's such a joy to potter about in autumnal garden and it annoys me that all the must-do's gather to crowd the peace out of my weekends. Grrr.

Not a bad day again, plenty of cloud, but no rain, and reasonably warm so I took advantage to clear another area of the lawn border of any Couch grass roots and then planted another 100 Tulips. There was a clump of Siberian Iris that needed splitting and moving into different spots, while there was also a Japanese Anemones that was getting too big so that also needed splitting. I'm getting to the age:old: where lifting/digging large clumps of plants out of borders is getting more difficult but, to my relief, the black sandy soil in the borders came to my rescue and "surrended" the clumps more easily than I thought it would. So I spent some time splitting the clumps and relocating the new pieces into the different borders. After a Mug of Tea, I got a hand fork out and lifted some of the numerous new corms that had grown in the large pots of the Iris collection. They're being sent off in a box shortly so I trimmed the leaves and the roots and got rid of the compost in the roots and they look okay. I will then have to start on the whole on the Iris collection when it's dry trimming the leaves and getting rid of any weeds in the pots. There's a whole lot of on the knees maintenance work to be done in the "walk around" border but since it's around 30' long by around 20' wide it's a job that is done a piece at a time.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

:rain::rain::rain: and more :rain: since yesterday evening. Very glad to have it , although it's delaying the gardening efforts. I wanted to do today. Yesterday day time was beautiful weather. Whilst waiting for kettle to boil to make a calming jar I nipped outside and pulled out a few weeds from a pot and cut said plant right back. I spotted a Hummingbird moth on a buddleja close by :).Later on - in the rain - I went to cut some veg for the buns dinner and after cutting off celeriac leaves I put the rest of it into compost bin.. Pouring down at the moment so probably going to spend most of day painting, pouring and making xmas baubles.

          Hi,

What an industrious lot you all are grafting away in your gardens enjoying yourselves; here in the UK enjoyment or happiness aren't allowed; just look at the BBC news everyday. :)

Same here luciusmaximus; the usual wet black hole; the forecast for heavy rain is actually bang on today; when the forecast is for a dry sunny day then obviously they are just joking. I served my apprenticeship down a deep coal mine and looking outside I think I need my helmet and lamp it's so dark. Yesterday started off poor but improved in the afternoon allowing me to wash the car; had I waited though I could have just thrown a bar of soap at it this morning and let Blackie wash it.

Our gardens look lovely whilst wet; the rain brings out the contrast between soil and plants; I had half a box of lawn weed and feed left over so rather than it sit in the garden hut I rightly or wrongly applied it to the wet grass yesterday; Blackie is either watering it in or washing it to the valley bottom as I type.

Bron and I have just been watching last nights CCTV footage; it's interesting to see active spiders; cats on our windowsill scoffing biscuits and a pair of badgers wandering around; I took a picture of the badgers licking each other a couple of nights ago but the camera is in the workshop and I don't fancy wrapping up like an Eskimo to collect it but I'll post the pictures later.

It'll soon be bonfire night then Christmas; roll on Cadbury's Cream Eggs.

          Kind regards, Colin.

Managed to finish off cutting the paddock hedge yesterday which took much longer than my anticipated half a day. I now have to cut the hedge on the farmers field side but that shouldn't be as bad a job. I intended to do this today but rain put an end to that idea.

This morning I dug a strelitzia out of a pot (sounds much easier than it was). The strelitzia is sold but we wanted the pot for another plant. We love the strelitzia flowers but there aren't many and they dont last long so we decided to sell it for someone else, rather than us to over-winter it again. Its a well established plant (10+ years old) so will give someone else the flowers without the wait for the plant to mature.

Just moved more tender plants into the tunnel (bananas and cannas) and decided it was time for a bite to eat.

Seed grown echiverias to be moved to the tunnel next as they don't have enough light in their current position.

@Perki it didn't turn up on Friday so I'm hoping for tomorrow. Weather isn't looking good for tomorrow so it will probably be built on Tuesday

Current state of the tunnel. More space will be available when the chillies have finished. The canna and banana leaves will be cut back when the plants have dried off a bit

                    Hi,

I've just enjoyed an hour at the top of the mountain with the hoe; as usual it was wet and for a change light drizzle but it didn't bother me at all; I was wrapped up well in waterproofs in fact it was rather pleasant; I should have been born with a full set of waterproofs living in Yorkshire.

                    Kind regards, Colin.

Planter arrived this morning so I decided to build it before the rain came.

All I can say is thankyou to the person who invented the electric screwdriver ! 2 and a bit batteries later and it is built.

Ive started to fill with a mix of gravel and soil but the rain came.

It looks tiny there but its 8' x 4'. The hoops are to support a plastic cover. Agaves are ok with cold but don't like it cold and wet.

Knowing there was rain coming later this afternoon I started digging up the Couch Grass roots in a small portion, near the Green House, of the "Walk Around" border which is around 30' by 20'. It also meant digging up several Gladioli, Siberian Iris, some Perennial Poppies and other stuff so that I could dig up and follow the long roots of the Couch Grass to get them out completely. As probably everyone knows Couch Grass roots will invade and hide in Shrub roots which, if you want them completely out, means digging up the Shrubs, as I didn't want to go that far I will wait until the Couch Grass roots push out foliage and paint them carefully with Weed Killer to get rid of them.
There was a large clump of Iris that seperated easily and gave me around 9 single plants that I'll plant elsewhere. In the cleared area I planted another 100 Tulip bulbs plus some other bulbs that I'd uncovered from another area. I think I've only got another 600 of new Tulip bulbs to plant, 150 Daffs, plus 250 Crocus, and 45 Alliums which I will hopefully plant tomorrow as the forecast weather is supposed to be cool and dry. I've also got two buckets of last years Tulips and Daffs in the Green House which I will find room for on the East side of the "Walk Around" border after clearing out some other plants that need dividing and moving.
After that it was a sit down and a Mug of Tea and, being too near the Computer, I ordered 3 x "Patty's Plum" Perennial Poppies, Geum "Blazing Sunset", "Mrs Bradshaw", "Lady Stratheden", Astrantia Major "Rose", Thalictrum "Album", Kniphofia "Citrina", and Rudbeckia "Goldsturm".........will I never learn??!!:dunno::wallbanging::coffee:
