My old friend called in today to see how I was. We usually go for a spot lunch, but not this week. He once again admired three water colours I have. One of a Peregrin, one Black-backed Shrike and one of a Kingfisher. All painted by a friend of ours and all life size. He then asked about some other framed exhibits, asking who painted them. He was shocked when I said, Val my late wife. Bye the bye, they are not paintings but embroidery. I think it was called needlepoint. The material is made up of strands that form squares, there is a name for it. Working from a pattern. Holes had to be counted and a stitch made. This was no mean task for Val as she had no feeling in her fingertips.

I do think it's wonderful that folk have such skills.

I fell in love with the pattern a couple of years back when I had a craving for liquorice allsorts.
Yes, they are my adaptation of Bertie Bassets.
@Fat Controller - if I had an ounce of the IT knowledge that you have, I would be happy,

It sounds like tapestry or cross stitch @Mike Allen. I'm currently working a piece of cross stitch. If you think it would help with identification I'll put a couple of pics up tomorrow.

I think this is what you mean Mike, it's what I'm using at the moment. A slight correction to your spelling if you don't mind, it's called Aida.

Ah yes, @Mike Allen . If using Aida, then your wife was doing counted cross stitch. So she would have had a chart, or map, showing where the different coloured crosses should go. Then it’s a lot of careful counting, and stitching a cross (or half-cross) in the correct place.

It can create a very delicate and textured effect, if a little “pixelated”..

I've just finished this cross stitch which I'll mount and frame in the new year (without the creases). :) The dots are printed on the fabric.

Thank you Sian and Jenny. :)

Yes, it is Wrendale, the artist being Hannah Dale. You may have seen crockery, place mats etc. with some of her designs. I like her whimsical wildlife designs and will work on a few for my guest room. I've just started another one - to be revealed at a later point. :)
