I have those (not tablets but for high pressure stockings that I have had to wear for the last 25 years) but if I go too long without putting it in the prescription, because I have looked after them well, the doctor has to see me and prescribe again. The last time this happened I spoke to the practice manager to explain the situation and he arranged for the repeat to be started again. Two minutes on the phone saved the doc, and myself, an appointment - I try not to go to the surgery and be amongst all those sick people

I take approx 38 tablets a day and all I have to do is phone the pharmacy when I want anything re-ordering. No waste, no seeing the doctor.

I take a couple of prescription tabs, but I much prefer homeopathy remedies.
Regarding folk having to take lots of tabs, reminds me of Val, my late wife. She took lots each day. Turned out she had so many things wrong with her. It wasn't until her passing, I read a report by one of the medical team at St. Thomas's hosp. She stated, badly managed Diabetis two. Having become friends with a local Boots pharmacy, I asked him what all Val's tabs were for. His reply told me so much. All of her medications were for hypertension. Not a single one was for the treatment of Diabetis. I often used to wonder just how all these concoctions could sort themselves out in ones gut and work properly.

Something else that bothers me. At one time your GP had a good knowledge of you. He/she would prescribe carefully. Now you get home with your medication and you have a manuscript to read. Don't take this if you suffer from etc etc. In all honesty. Years ago, I read medicine for three years. Now with so much water under the bridge, even I have to research the names of modern medicines etc. Remembering back to when I suffered duodenal ulcers. I was prescribed Taggamet. Reading up on it. Long term use can cause stomach cancer. Mentioning this to the Doc. Not to worry Mike. We'll treat that also if need be. " Great confidence builder"

I remember, many decades ago, that GlaxoSmithKline (the manufacturers of Tagamet, but the company wasn't that name in those days) had their research headquarters in the UK on the original site of Beechams that became SmithKlineBeechams and they did experiments on volunteer employees. Some of those volunteers were their biochemistry researchers and all of them that I knew said that they had good results and were eventually able to come off of medication. None of those I knew had succumbed to cancer - but I haven't seen any of them since I retired 20 years ago :noidea:

I certainly agree with that. The one I take daily was originally prescribed last year (Calcium/D3 for Osteoporosis) but now I just take a Calcium/D3/Magnesium tablet non-prescription. I take nothing else prescribed, not bad for 71. :yahoo:

That's all I take as well Victoria. Had been on meds since my 20's for Osteoarthritis and later Osteoporosis but stopped everything about 8 yrs ago as I didn't like their effect on the rest of my body. Some days I do cease up a bit ,more so in Winter when I can't get out into the garden. Hubs and I always try to fit in our daily walk though and that helps.:)

I also make sure my diet is good too and purposely eat foods that help ease and maintain my joints.I think a lot can be achieved through healthy lifestyle and diet and less reliance on medication ....but please don't take me wrong....I fully appreciate that most folk DO need to take them, but for now I choose not too.:blue thumb:

I'm also a fan of homoeopathy and have my own personal evidence and a fair amount of empirical evidence (homoeopathy treatment room in our house) - but I still can't explain it. :)

I agree with the replies. Val had turned to a homeopath as an additional means of treating her Diabetes 2. I soon realised that, although I had spent some three years reading medicine at the same time being otherwise employed. Here with homeopathy, the practitioner not only took on board the medical problem but perhaps, more so, the patient. For instance. Mrs A. Doctor I am constantly in pain. My head feels as if it's on fire. I find it hard to concentrate.

OK. Mrs A. I'll give you a prescription for some pain killers. (paracetamol). Fair enough. Short term relief. Oh no! student at the back of the class. Sir! Professor. The patient complains of continual headaches and pains. Sir. Do we not. Probably all of us also suffer these symptoms. Yes in our daily lives we all in some way suffer pain. This to me is like a red traffic light. STOP! Think. General medical practice has fallen into the trap. Patient is in pain......Dope them up and pain might go away.

Homeopath. Here it's not so much the pain, but the individual that is treated. The homeopatrh of course can prescribe what is called, an emergency remedy. To note. My emergency kit comprises. Arnica.=bleeding, bruising, shock, jet lag. Calendula.=cleansing and healing of cuts and damaged skin and tissue. Cantharis. Great for urinary infections. Rhus Tox.=This I use for pain. Lycopodium I use for general tummy, intestinal problems. Urtic urens and apis mel, both used for itching etc. These I call, my emergencies. Deeper consultations reveal, tell me more about the person. A good practicsioner needs to find out what makes you tick. Your GP side steps this.

To be fair to the GP, they are just not allocated the time to look into these things. It's a fault of the system and not of the GP.

Mrs Shiney gives an hour and a half to two hours for a first consultation so is able to follow up most things mentioned with supplemental questions. I agree that it's necessary to get a full picture of the possible problems. She has/had many of the medical profession as patients (officially retired now but still sees her old patients when needed).

Talking about appointment times @shiney , when we ring our doctors up we are asked whether we want a standard 10 minute appointment or a double ( 20 mins ) or triple ( 30 mins ).,
