I am less sure - 5G will be the solution for many less populated areas as the costs of installing it will be diluted as it has the potential to catch a number of users rather than the few that fibre does. Going to solely 5G for everyone and doing away with fibre etc would be a mistake, especially in cities/densely populated areas, for the simple reasons of capacity and failure/fallback.

Capacity could in theory be resolved, if enough transmitters/repeaters were installed along with the other associated infrastructure - but therein lies part of the problem, as there are a lot of folks who would flip at the thought of having a mobile phone mast in their street, or worse outside their house. The real fun and games would begin when there was a failure - currently, if a fibre link fails it affects one or two properties up to maybe a few streets; if a 5G network failed, it could affect millions at the same time. I understand that it is an improvement on 4G, but when all is said and done it is still radio waves carrying the signals, the same as 4G and 3G.

I agree with you FC, fibre has many years employment left in it! 5G would be (to most savvy people) an obvious and relatively low cost alternative to getting remoter villages connected; they don't have to use it as a part of a mobile phone plan as you can get data only SIMS that presumably would form an alternative hub within the home. Same as in-car wifi.

There's also satellite connections possible to very remote places. Corbyns 'plan' is just plain dumb and ill-conceived, the latest in a very long stream of them :(

          BBC Election 'debates' planned -
          • 22 November: A Question Time Leaders' Special. Conservative, Labour, SNP and the Lib Dem party leaders will take questions from the audience (The Bloodbath)
          • 29 November: A live debate with figures from the seven major political parties in the UK - Conservatives, Labour, Lib Dems, Scottish National Party (SNP), Greens, Plaid Cymru and the Brexit Party (The Bun Fight)
          • 6 December: A live head-to-head debate between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn (The Slanging Match)
          • 9 December: Question Time Under 30 focused on an audience made up of young voters (The Vitriolic Venting)
I see both SNP and lib dems are dripping in court today about being excluded from the ITV debate tomorrow. "It's clearly unlawful"... REALLY?! Oh boo hoo. It's like crying to the teacher in a playground because the other kids won't play with them!

Well I cant remember ever hearing such a load of rubbish from all parties ever before an election.
I might watch it but it will be more of the same stupid promises and slagging off the other side.

Politics have reached an all time low IMO and its not down to brexit, its down to the politicians playing up to the media.

Well I watched it, and cant say either convinced me they know what they are doing.

Sad to say, apart from the fact he cant really back any of his claims up , Corbyn came over looking the best, Boris just kept going back to brexit at every opportunity.
Oh god what a bunch of morons we are being presented with.

What's the point of having a debate when they haven't even launched their manifestos?

Neither of them said anything - standard for a politician - and they have both been accused of evading making an answer to the questions.

Some say that they even used long or weasel words so as not to say anything.

Put in simple terms, I think it was just prevarication, equivocation, obfuscation, mendacity and discombobulation! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

So I ended up watching Masterchef instead. Now those people certainly speak the truth. :)

I caught snippets only thankfully. Not impressed. Although JC was forcing himself to be calm and collected, he doesn't have the same 'fizz' that comes off bojo but neither filled me with confidence. Nothing new, all the old rhetoric that is already out in the media which I blame both the questions and the participants for :(

Bojo is all for it and full of go, whereas JC is just plodding. For now I'm sticking with looking at their pledges while campaigning and what's on their official websites to make a decision and fully expect whatever group get in will water down the promises.

One of the yeloow's new ideas announced today - to base stamp duty on the energy rating of the property. This is worse than stupid. First off, stamp duty is a crock and should be abolished with a better system ( not this one!); secondly the house someone buys is more often than not to fix up and therefore improve the energy rating! Even a new front door will affect it so you buy a knackered house and pay loads of tax... this is just going to leave a lot of houses on the 'leave well alone' pile. Housing market will suffer quite badly I would expect.
They also want to up the qty houses built, or rather actually get to the current target of 300000 new homes per year. There's a reason that they're not built quick enough and it ain't the target!
