More a jack of all trades, car mechanic, car sprayer, electrician, plumber, painter and decorator, and computer repairer, you name it and I'll have a go at it

That's what it's all about - even more so when it comes to gardening. Gardening is mostly trial and error - you can follow the words of the book and everything will still go pear shaped. I have given up trying to propagate - used rooting hormone, low nutrient seed compost, the lot - and still every single cutting dies. But then, half the fun is in trying .

Sheal, my dear respected friend. Yes, GC is a great site for getting help and advice. I find also that the members here are always ready to open up and chat, to share all kinds of experiences, and thankfully we never post anything offensive or insulting. So if anyone finds themself in a similar situation to me. Lonely. Then fear not. Open up and lets all help out.

@Oldcodger I too am hoping to be a competent gardener. Well, I've been hoping and trying for a few decades or so :)

I hope you are encouraged by the fact that there's lots of perennial newbies here and I think I'm guilty of always setting the bar too high for my skill level. Lots of interesting journeys :).

Yes it's trial and error like @clanless has said. That goes for cooking too, yesterday i cooked a Turkey to portion up and put in the freezer. On the rapper it said it will take 4 hours to cook, it took 3and a half.
