Agreed - but it was also 'fueled' :heehee: by OPEC hiking their prices so high that it also added to the fuel crisis and helped cause the massive inflation that led up to the miners' strike and the three day week. By coincidence  this followed us joining the Common Market.

The Winter of Discontent was started because of the Labour Party capping pay rises.

Promises. Promises! Wasn't that ajoke at one time. OOoops! So nothing changes. This is like a game of monopoply. I buy, I sell. I give. I take.

Did you notice Boris recently stated. That tax on Tampons would go. Honestly. Being one of a medical minded interest. Why in the first place should medical, sanitary or otherwise, products be taxed?
I have to say. When the media headlines purpoted to the fact that in part, due to VAT many youg school girls couldn't afford ST's or Tampons and had to make do and mends. For any political or otherwise party to be responsible.!!!!!!??????

"Labour's plan to scrap short sentences"

Am I the only person when reading that newspaper headline who immediately thinks I'd better tell them where to go in a short sentence consisting of 2 words each with one syllable before they ban me from doing it?

When we joined the Common Market it was agreed by all countries that ST's would have 17.5% VAT  (probably all men! :dunno:). 19 years ago we managed to get them to agree to drop it to 5% but we can't drop it to zero without permission and agreement from all EU countries :rolleyespink:. Tax is one of the few things that we can't change unilaterally. For a lot of individual changes we only need to get a few EU members to agree, but not for tax.

The amount of waffling they do without saying anything suggests they implemented this policy a long time ago! :roflol:

              Hi,

Many thanks Scrungee for correcting me; I made a mistake. :mute::help:

When Bron and I married in 1976 the first year or so looked promising with us not only on maximum mortgage but borrowing extra paying an insurance premium in order to buy our semi detached house. I recall thatcher on TV stating the tories believed everyone should own their own home; it all suddenly became very bad indeed; no interest relief on our mortgage which then had 15% interest; no married mans allowance; three day working in the mill; a second job for two days at a waste paper/cardboard company and a Saturday morning job collecting money around council house estates on commission for March The Tailor; Bron too was working all in order just keep the roof over our heads; thatcher then virtually gave away the council houses with massive discounts and I believe standard £50 legal fees. Lots of family problems and lots of government problems started our married life and now 43 years on little has changed other than there isn't a government party worth voting for these days; it's just a shambles and won't get better any time soon. As then it is now with useless government of any colour. :dunno:

              Kind regards, Colin.

You forgot to mention high inflation constantly eroding value of wages, struggling to get pay increases to keep up with inflation, house price crashes, negative equity, etc.

And many young people today believe you had it too easy and think they're entitled to a share of your hard earned savings/pension/property.

P.S. Another thing Labour did to make us worse off was abolish the 10% tax band 10p tax rate - Wikipedia It's also important to remind young people that Labour introduced university tuition fees Tuition fees in the United Kingdom - Wikipedia

I seem to remember, but may be mistaken, that it was Gordon Brown who removed the married man's allowance.

Mortgage interest relief at source (MIRAS) was brought in by Geoffrey Howe (Conservative) and removed by Gordon Brown (Labour).

Labour want to cap class sizes to 30... Now this was done already not so very long ago but guess what - it's not sustainable. The school reject a pupil application due to being oversubscribed, the parent appeals and the LEA overrule (100%) making the class size exceed the cap. It's complete BS from the reds!

                          Hi,

What's different now Scrungee is that so many want everything but not work for it encouraged by our benefits system. I was working down a deep coal mine at the age of 15 and know what real poverty was like not like now when poverty is £26,000 a year or so? Clothes were handed down and wives remained home with kids whilst husbands; yes husbands not partners went out to work. I'm just a dinosaur brought up of a time when to eat meant to work.

I'm not up on politics because I think politics like religion both stink.

Atheists win fight to make church school hold non-religious assemblies

                          Kind regards, Colin.

It's things like this that make me angry! Put your child in a different school! They've now burdened the taxpayer with court and legal fees and that's before the additional pressures now forced upon the school which they can ill afford. They knew it was a CoE school so why select it? Argh!

Dell says to Trigger, "did you have large classes when you was at school?"
