Well, you know what they say, Shiney, "What goes around, comes around".....even for Politiicians

 

Mrs Shiney's father worked, and lived, all over the world so neither she nor her siblings were born in this country. Over the years, going back 70 years or so, they have had some problems - especially as some of them don't have their birth certificates. They all have UK passports which helps a lot and, apparently, was quite a struggle for her father to obtain even back in the 1960's.

Each sibling was born in a different country and one brother, who now has dual citizenship in UK and Brazil - where he is living, has the biggest problem. He lives in Brazil and also worked in Uruguay (just over the border from Brazil). He wanted to buy an apartment in Uruguay as he was working there two days a week. Sounds simple - not! For a non-national to buy a property they have to fill in loads of forms which includes producing a birth certificate. His birth certificate is in Burmese and they wouldn't accept it.

So they said he needs either to have a letter from the British consulate in Burma verifying the certificate or for the Burmese government to say it is genuine. The consulate said they couldn't do that as they have no documentation to verify it. The Burmese authorities refused to even accept that the British actually ran (only did so for 124 years!), lived in or had any UK citizens born there.

The problem was first solved by buying it through a proxy (one of the locals who worked for him) and, after three years of negotiation, finding the right civil servant to accept the certificate as being genuine. Of course, no money changed hands!

 

I'm feeling pretty happy right now, I've realised this lamentable period to the election will be over in a couple of days!

Will the predicted bad weather tomorrow affect whether any of you go and vote?

It won't affect me as I have to go to the Polling station anyway - I've got the keys

 

Nope. We moved house some months ago and despite filling in all the paperwork we still haven't got our polling cards so can't vote in our true blue constituency anyway. If we could then we absolutely would.

 

I will be driving into Manchester tomorrow, Shiney, to visit friends but, on the drive back home, I will stop by the Polling Station at the RC Church, which is only about 100 yards, on the small back lane behind my garden to vote. Then when I get home, sit down and turn on the TV I will not be watching anything to do with the election but something like Rag, Tag and Bobtail on "Watch with Mother", or counting how many single pieces of rice there are in my large bag of rice.

 

@ARMANDII sorry to ruin your enjoyable spare time but there are 32,000 grains of uncooked Basmati rice to the pound.

 

Now, you see, Shiney, you just never know Some grains might be smaller than others so will weigh less, and some might be bigger and weigh more, so it needs investigating. And then, there is the shape and colour to consider, so it's bound to keep me away from anything else that might be happening tomorrow.

 

The overs and unders should balance out fairly well but you're certainly right about the colour. You need to separate the colours anyway as they may cook at different rates.
