What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2019

I'm still armchair gardening today..Sifting thru all my seeds and logging all the ones I want to sow into this year's gardening diary. Will sow 4 different lots of Antirrhinums soon.

And will attempt to sow some Cleome really early this year to see if germination will be better.
Well to be honest couldn't be worse that last years efforts.....0%!!!
The year before was a whopping 1%!!

As you can tell I definitely don't have green fingers

 

Faxed in my seed order to one seed company and ordered new HPS light bulbs for my son's indoor area. I think he tries to overwinter everything! Then placed an online order with Park seed out of the States. Weird. Our border security will not allow me to carry back seeds from other countries but they don't care about mailings.

Started some coleous seeds, a few bushy basil seeds too.

Reorganized my seed binder. I've got a sleeve for each winter month and one labelled "outside" so I know they are direct seed. Also a sleeve for failures and another for seeds already sown. Herbs are in another sleeve as I can grow them anytime.

Then I went outside and raked most of the leaves that fell a few minutes before it snowed a few weeks ago. They had finally dried out and since I don't need anymore spread on the gardens, I brown bagged them. I'll have to store those until the spring because the last pick up for yard waste was two weeks ago.

 

The law works in mysterious ways @CanadianLori ...and is a law unto it's self!.

I've had 0% success with some seeds. Proteus is the one that really gave me the middle finger. Cost bunches and carefully smuggled home this purchase from Kew Gardens because I know it would never be able to survive outside in winter here and thus non intrusive. It sure showed me!

But, you know, if we were successful at everything, we wouldn't need to buy seedlings. And buying keeps a gardener employed Our good black finger deed

 

Washed and disinfected the two greenhouses.

 

Done a bit of pottering-checked the greenhouse and filled up bird feeders etc. also tidied up some house plants. Then decided to put a few succulent/cacti/sedum (or whatever they are) snippings onto some perlite on the conservatory windowsill. Hopefully they will root. Was also good use of an empty Ferrero rocher tub.

 

Checked over all the plants overwintering in the cold frames and greenhouse.All looking good.
Deadheaded the Pansies and Bellis in the tubs.

Prepared a big bag of compost ready for seed sowing. Think my arms will be achy tomorrow from all the sieving!

 

How'd it get emptied?

Just spent a little more time getting my seeds sorted. Also vacuumed the indoor grow area so it will be ready once my seeds germinate.

 

Ha ha glad it’s not just me who hoovers gardening areas-i hoovered out the greenhouse as it was just so much easier! Lol.

Can u believe it-I’ve not had one. Husband on the other hand has pilfered two already.

I’ve eaten nearly a whole huge trifle to myself over the last couple of days...can’t face anymore sweets.

 

Remove the last of 2019 annuals and any weeds they're hiding.

 

Jobs in my garden ........ wandering round and round aimlessly trying to decide where to start .

Yesterday I pulled out lots more blanket weed from the pond. It just keeps on growing and growing. The snails like it but don't eat enough to control it. I also cut back an Erigeron in one of my sinks and cut off spent seed pods from a large Toadflax in a pot, just to tidy it up. Mrs Ratty has made a home in one of the compost bins and was somewhat disgruntled at my lifting the lid and dumping a load of plant cutting on her head - not literally, but she was on top of the other stuff and shot down inside the bin when I removed the lid. I didn't know she was in there.

Does anyone on here use or used a sickle and sythe? Been thinking about them as an alternative to an electric grass cutter. I think I read somewhere that you need to do a course to be taught how to use them.

 

There is a nack to using a sythe, you either got it or you haven't, if you haven't use one before you're musles will hurt a lot, keep it sharp is the way to go and get yourself in a relaxed mood and get into the swing i've used them when I was younger but not now
