I've always found the kitchen to be the heart of the home and parties so that is why mine had to be expanded many moons ago.
      Old kitchen
      bond 150.jpg
knock down walls tear out old and old dining room and old living room. Rip up floors, rewire, and on and on.. this was just the start.

I lived with this for 5 months. Coming home from work and spackling, sweeping, gathering up debris and disposing of it. The above is the old living room which faces the side of the house. This became the dining room. The dining room was then swallowed up as part of the kitchen.

Now when we have a party, everyone fits in the kitchen, which is where it has traditionally convened :)

There's not much I would do different as pretty much knew where everything was going to be stored when I designed/planned the makeover.

      Planning is everything!

Next jobs are to confirm structural calcs, design for soakaway / drainage and revise the sockets, ethernet and lighting layout...

              Yes, I couldn't tell if it is 1921 or 1927. I suspect 1927. :)

Completed April 15 1927; built by two brothers, Thomas and William (Bill) and the latter lived there until he died and his daughter moved in. A lot of the neighbours knew Bill and his wife (who was the gardener and died 10 years before him) and apparently the garden was at one time quite spectacular. Everyone is happy I've bought the place and not a developer sticking several houses on the plot :)

Have you managed to get any photos of the place 'back in the day' ?

I find it fascinating to look back at how places develop.

I'm afraid not. Although there's a written out piece that the daughter wrote via the solicitors, I think she's actually died now and remaining family are abroad. I might drop the solicitors a note to see if anything could be available though, nothing to lose afterall!

I did a quick Google on the remote chance that some images might be there (a very long shot) and obviously found nothing, but I did find the house name meaning -
Altor is an old masculine given name (Latin: Altor or gens Altorus). The name means "caretaker" or "caregiver".

That's a shame. We were given the solicitors paperwork dating back over 100 years when we bought this place as solicitors no longer need to keep it. Reading where other bits of land were sold, agreements between the farmer and a previous owner to swap bits of land, prices that the house sold for and suchlike.
The one thing that did stand out was that most people didn't stay here for more than 5 years. Many died. Luckily we've bucked the trend.

First set back today and its not a massive one tbh. I wanted to keep the machine shed but lets just say it was built to last in its current position and not to be moved under any circumstances! Cost of lifting and moving it would be ridiculous so its getting flattened and burned. :(

Check out your library's local history section for Aerofilms oblique aerial images Aerofilms - Wikipedia which are now sometimes also available online.

Old postcards are another source of information, and we have one showing our house/street in 1901.
