@Mike Allen I tend to agree with your views. The issue of free roaming cats and unspeyed/ neutered pets is a somewhat emotive one. It is very easy for people to obtain pets without considering all the responsibility and financial costs involved. I disagree with pet shops selling pets. I also think people's perceptions of supposedly ' easy, low maintenance pets ', like cats and rabbits needs to change. They are neither easy or low maintenance and certainly not cheap. I could argue my corner for hours but I'm in the wrong thread to do that.

Had a very pleasant two hours outside today. Very cold but I was happy to be in the garden. I sorted out my third bath, adding more gravel and Herbs. Then I got a shovel and a tool with a long handle attached to a wire brush (can't remember what it called ) and scraped away some weeds and moss growing on a section of path. I like moss and generally speaking I encourage it but on an old concrete path it's quite slippy so it has to go. Swept the path afterwards. Had a wander around front garden and sat on the bench for awhile.

Well, that was quick and relatively painless!

I’ve been out with the lawnmower (third time this month - my neighbours must think I’m mad!), to cut the piles of laurel cuttings from hand pruning the long hedge around shrubs and ornamentals.

Two large grass box loads of cuttings done, and taken down to the compost bays. Bramble growth removed from the holly and bottom (mainly) privet hedge.
Top tip - if you have a problem with brambles, get out there now with your secateurs, as they stand out really well at the moment, against the mostly dormant “host” plants.

 

It feels like every time I have a day off work it starts to rain currently Over the past week I've done little more that duck in and out moving/uprighting/salvaging pots that the builders have interfered with following yet more scaffolding issues to deal with the roof problems of the top floor flat. Add in a series of very frustrating conversations with our conveyancing solicitor this morning and I'm just about done for the day

On the plus side, we have a conveyancer because our offer on a house was accepted, and it has a flat turfed 170ft blank canvas garden Which is a bit big bright side to be fair.

Does anyone have any tips on how best to cultivate hellebores? A house up the street has a beautiful large clump and I keep wanting to knock and ask if I can have a bit - but should I be asking for cuttings, splitting or seeds?

 

@2nd_bassoon The Hybrid Helleborus won't come true to seed especially if they have a few variety's. I go with divisions but with helleborus being quite expensive I wouldn't get your hopes up, but it well know gardeners can be over generous with plants

 

Thanks @ARMANDII and @Perki, I thought that might be the case! I meant to ask them about dividing the clump last summer, and promptly forgot the moment the flowers had faded

 

It was cold and windy but I still enjoyed sitting there. The bench is a good place for deep thoughts and reflections and contemplations. And the company provided by the birds is excellent.
