What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2020

I’ve just been on my hands and knees, taking last year’s growth off the water lilies, yellow flags and ... oh what’s the spear-shaped leafed plant? Blue flowers...

Anyway, my tea went cold, as did my knees and hands. The last of the sunshine has faded, so back inside!

 

1.6m boundary wall and I've got 27 x 3.1m pleached Holm Oaks to go around the boundary - the trunk is 1.6/7m and then the pleached greenery height is for another 1.4/1.5m above the bare trunk! Fencing quote being done tomorrow. Hopefully we can get it all sorted and done asap.

 

Tidied up a couple of clematis and some grasses today. They are already showing signs of new growth.

Laid a bit of turf to patch up where a laurel was at the end of the drive. Being lazy I guestimated that I'd need 5m of turf so I collected 6m thinking that the spare could be used to patch up where a couple of apple trees were. 6m only just covered where the laurel used to be. It looks great from a distance but not perfect close up but,having dogs, the lawn will never be a bowling green and I'm sure it will look much better after its knitted together and had a couple of cuts.

 

Oh bother!! This is my back yard... maybe I'll shovel a path to the greenhouse

 

I grew that for baskets one year (really easy), the next year they came under the baskets, then spread along the road, plus the road at the back where we have rear access. Not complaining, nice to see a few more flowers growing out of all sorts of cracks. Think it was about 10 years before they disappeared.

 

You must really appreciate the summer when it finally arrives. I like the changing of the seasons but you have too much winter for my liking over there

 

After finishing all the indoor tasks I had the afternoon free for my Dad's garden.

Cleared the patio of moss, tidied up two huge Hydrangeas.
Raked through all the gravel on the driveway to get rid of moss and leaves.
Weeded a couple of borders and found 6 very healthy looking strawberry plants, goodness knows how they got there but as I found vine weevil in the ones he has in pots a couple of weeks ago...we're happy bunnies.

I posted about the Beech trees in his front garden a couple of weeks back well today we had a tree 'man ' out to look at them and he thinks the two with the white marks might be OK ,although one does had some dead wood he thinks it might not be that disease that Beech can get but needs to do further tests. Surprisingly the one that we weren't worried about is in fact in a bad way and will probably need felling. He's reporting back to the council as they all have TPO's on them and he will email me the outcome.

Back home and feeling a tad achy now.

Yes they're easy, the year before last i had seedlings growing in the tarmac driveway, I scooped them up and put them in a tray of compost and kept them going till the next year. Here they don't do well outside in the winter, but they do well in the gh.

 

@Sian in Belgium I read through your whole thread on Wednesday on how your made your pond back in 2018 . I was amazed at the work you managed to do in the short time your hubby was away!! And so happy that he was amazed too

It has been great being able to see it evolve over time. It looks so natural, well done.

Has your hubby agreed to the 2nd pond yet?

 

Lovely sunny morning here so I've ventured into the greenhouse to see what I've killed from a few months of neglect, pleasantly surprised, most things seem ok, biggest surprise is my begonias which i lifted and left they seem to have survived, all my chilli plants have lost their leaves but the stem still looks green and can be picked up and the pot stays on, but I'm not sure if they will regrow.

 

I went gingerly into ours the other day and was surprised to see a couple of geranium cuttings in bloom!! Amazing what neglect can achieve!!

 

Although the lawns were still really too damp to mow I felt the need to get them done and the edges..looks tons better and at least they're ready for the next deluge of rain. Chook run has had a 'good do' and just battened down the hatches ready for this 'ere 'storm'...and I shall soon be pouring a wee dram ready for the Rugger...
