What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2020

Spent most of the day in the greenhouse, as very wet underfoot every where else and occasional heavy showers. Repotted lilium nepalense, planted achimenes tubercles, sowed carrots, beetroot in blocks, peas and lettuce. Then sowed tomato, gladioli, dianthus seed and moved them to propagator.

 

Its been a nice day but for the bitter wind, it was lovely and warm in the GH . Potted up the last of the remaining dahlias today hopeful my new ones will turn up this week , potted on some Cobaea.

Pruned the last two roses and did some tidying up of that bed. Prune the two Clematis viticella on the pargola.

My dad been putting in some more drainage , he put a drain across the top of the lawn and swapped the gutter pipe round and the water butt bin which is much easier side to collect water from.

 

Still very cold with strong winds but sunny today all day . No real gardening as such, just pottered about for half hour or so. Picked up some fallen branches from a dead tree in front garden. Cut blooms off my battered Daffs. Had a very enjoyable peer into pond watching the Tadpoles. Vaguely concerned that the amount of algae and blanket weed might affect oxygen levels.

Not so much a job that I've done...more of a job I should've done!!.
Just found a bag of mixed Rockery Tulips that states they should've been planted last Autumn.....oops. They are sprouting so I think I'll plant them out tomorrow...and cross my fingers.

 

Ah! Nigel me old mate. You mention plantin lilies. Might I ask. Are you a member of the RHS Lily group?. The group is the oldest of all the RHS groups.

 

I forgot about my Dahlias!!! First time I've left them in situ, getting nervous now fingers crossed at least a couple have survived. I will have a gentle poke around and see if there are any signs of life....that is if I can remember where they all are!

 

Didn't get much done yesterday as we had a 3 1/2 hour round trip to visit an on line friends succulent / cacti nursery.

finished off the garden lights, potted on some more canna seedlings, potted on Ricinus which are growing at an alarming rate and potted on another plant - ID unknown until a friend remembers what seeds they gave us

 

Not sure if any jobs will be done today, unless you count a thorough inspection....

I have finally made it back to Belgium, now that we have a competent live-in carer in place for my mum.
So once I’ve finished typing this, I’m picking up my coffee, and having a wander around the garden. Even from the window, I can see loads of bulbs have come up!

 

Started my first seeds of the year in one of my bargain heated propagators. Even though I got 2 of them for less than a tenner, I still look enviously at my favourite YouTube allotmenteers with their Vitopod setups.




Job for tomorrow is, if the weather allows, sorting out and cleaning the greenhouse. Feels great to be doing something approaching gardening again.

 

Been out and about , fixed / refitted mum banister this morning and had a wounder round her garden .

Back home I've dug out some of the old compost out of the greenhouse tomato / cucumber border and top it back up with home made compost , I've covered it up this year with plastic bag to keep the moister in its a pain in the neck to get damp again after its dried out. What surprising is the amount of plastic in the home made compost, to say I put everything in it and don't intentionally put plastic in it quite a few bits and bobs in it.

Give the greenhouse a sweep out and knocked in a new post for the wood around the veg border. Tidied the GH up plant everywhere and it not even spring yet to me, give the fuchsias a trim seen as they are budding up well and inspected all the other plants in the greenhouse and potted on any what need it.
