Hello @shiney they are smit marks and farmers have been using them for hundreds of years to identify who sheep belong to;):blue thumb:

I remember, many years ago when Chernobyl blew, that the farmers in the Lake District had to put a special coloured mark on the sheep. That said they weren't allowed to be sold for meat as they had, supposedly, been eating grass that could have been contaminated. The man from the ministry had tested the sheep first.

The farmer's wife asked him to test the lamb in her freezer and he said that was contaminated as well. She then told him that she had frozen that before Chernobyl! He didn't say anything and just walked away. The farm is five miles from Sellafield :rolleyespink:

When farmers introduce a particular ram/tup to a flock (or a bull to a herd of cows) the male's chest is liberally anointed with a dye of a particular colour. As he mounts each female to 'do his business' the dye comes off on her to indicate a) that she should be pregnant and b) which male was the father. Knowing the dates the male was there, the expected birth date can be calculated. By introducing a different male, and using a different colour, the next set of offspring can be programmed.

Scheme not yet involved for human application.

I can remember that at the time of Chernobyl, I was about to wean our eldest onto cows milk....but delayed it for a good year as we were concerned about the effect on it.

Sorry to have woken up memories, Shiney. If you can find a can of Striped paint it might work until the alarm clock goes off. 50th wedding anniversary last Friday.
