Took advantage of a few dry days and managed to cut the grass. Second cut of the season and its not looking that bad. Its not great but with two dogs running around its never going to be perfect.

What weedkiller do you use for that, @ARMANDII? I have a bit of a tricky problem with some couch grass which has finally won the battle with Geranium cantabrigiense for a spot under my Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn' after three years. I don't want to damage the roots of the shrub by just digging the whole area up so I'm assuming chemical treatment is my only option! What a mess, I should have used a larger-leaved geranium! :frown:

I use Roundup, Nick, but it doesn't matter what brand so long as it has Glyphosate in it. The trick is, at the start, to paint the Couch hiding in the Geranium using a small artist's brush. You will have to take out a leaf or two, or three, of the Geranium to make sure you can paint safely. One of the Couch Grass's weakness is that it spreads by long underground roots so painting one section of leaves will make the systemic chemical travel along the root and kill off other upsprouting grass blades.
It's not a instant cure in that you have to keep going back to carefully paint the offending grass leaves while taking care not to get any weedkiller on the shrub. I've done it around a Rose, a Lavender, a Geum, and Peony shoots. So carefully does it, a bit at a time, patience, and going back to paint the Couch Grass that is still showing time and again.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Hi Nick, I have several Geraniums in the garden and, I confess, I have never seen Couch Grass among them.

Same here, it has never turned up growing through any of my established geraniums! I can only conclude that it must be due to cantabrigiense being such a small-leaved variety and letting light through to the couch grass.:dunno:

Well I've done a bit today. Re cut the lawn edge borders which makes quite a big difference. Fed the all the pots with bulbs in with FBBone . Fed all the roses and mulched . Potted up some monarda squaw which was starting to scramble over a rose .

Yesterday cut down the old growth of a clump of Japanese anemones then it started raining but it helped my back from aching, i don't know why. Hubby started pruning the roses.

Shifted 2 tonnes of 10 mm gravel - to form a new patio area down at my Mum's. Vegging out this afternoon in front of Youtube. Finishing off allotment fencing tomorrow and planting 20 Cherry Laurels to enclose the seating area down there. Jealously is rife amongst the other allotment holders......

Been starting things off in the greenhouse today, various seed, begonias and potted up plugs and bare rooted plants, potted all my lily bulbs too, I found a dried chinese lantern blowing around looks quite nice. 20200305_151216.jpg 20200305_151226.jpg 20200305_152622.jpg

Today is a miserably cold and wet day, but I have fished the last lot of leaves out of the pond, just as the toads starts spawning. I will leave it undisturbed now, until the tadpoles, toad-poles and newt-poles are all free-swimming, around May...

It's a very sunny day today so have done about three hours of digging and weeding. The digging is quite easy as the ground is soft but not too soggy. Got out lots of perennial weeds, stinging nettles, thistles, buttercups, dandelions and loads of grass. I then filled in, again :mute:, the holes that the rabbits have dug to expose the roots of two Forsythia bushes. I guess their roots must be tasty :rolleyespink:. Some years back the deer ate all the branches, right down to the ground, of the same bushes. They were about 7ft high at the time - the deer were a bit shorter. :heehee:

I'm using the excuse of having done too much work for me to have something to eat and put my feet up for a while. :)
