Solved What is this annoying weed?

Good evening everyone, I'm after some advice please. We're renting a house and it has a marigold tree in the front garden, below the tree is gravel which is covered in an annoying weed that I have to remove by hand around 3 times per year, any idea what it is and how to destroy it forever?

Your tree looks like a Magnolia tree.
Is this in UK...or some where else in the world?

 

I think you need to hit it with a weedkiller before it gets large enough to flower.
Dont know what it is but I'm guessing an annual weed that has been allowed to flower and set seed in the past.

I tried last year with roundup I think it was and it did nothing

 

When did you try it, it wont work unless the weeds are growing strongly, so wait until April at least, you may need to re apply as the ground could be full of un germinated seeds.
Weed killers like round up dont effect seeds.

 

Thanks Pete, it was toward the end of summer last year I think, OK I'll look for a product that does kill seeds too

 

I agree with Pete, most young weeds look the same, wait until they get bigger, butvremember most weed killers do jot work if the temps falls beow 5 degrees C, even 4 or 5 days after application.

 

It looks like creeping Charlie also known as ground ivy I think. If it is creeping Charlie it's a perennial from the mint family. I'd recommend a broadleaf triple-mix herbicide. Check the ingredients 2, 4-D, Mecoprop (MCPP) and Dicamba. It worked for me. I also did the hand weeding but it takes over so quickly it formed a matt surface.

Glechoma hederacea or ground ivy, im not a gambling man, but I will have a tenner it is not, this form of nepeta does not like the wet conditions we currently have.

 

Just be careful what you use as some products could damage the Magnolia.
