Yep a wake up call for China to sort out itself out and get some hygiene, and stop selling dodgy stuff in markets.
We get all this talk about chlorinated chicken possibly coming from the US, after we finally break away from the EU.
But maybe its better than the salmonella infected stuff we are getting from the EU?

          But so does flu.
I realise a lot of people are at risk because of other health problems but I think, not to be putting too finer point on it, they should be the ones taking the action to stop themselves getting this virus, ie. self isolating and other precautions.

But the way its being handled is that the whole world has stopped, the stock markets have crashed and and we are all likely to be locked down.

The total over reaction seems to be based on the fact that there is no vaccine against it, as yet, but 20 yrs ago we had no vaccine against flu.

But life went on and we didn't see quite the same hysteria that we are now world wide.

Chlorinated chicken is not the big one. It is the injection of saline to make it weigh heavier that is nasty. Sure, you can't cook it dry but the salt ruins all other seasoning efforts! I speak from experience. I no longer buy meat from the states.

Was at my local earlier. Same cast and characters ....:heehee:. No face maskss or other signs of fear. Guessing we've not let panic bother our routines. :)

Not quite, pete, as this virus is far more contagious than Flu and in some countries the percentage of deaths is beyond the 2% forecast and nudging 9%. Flu does kill, no doubt, but underestimating and putting Covid 19 at the same level as Flu is, in my opinion, a mistake.:dunno:

The impact on business... I work for an international company and see every day what it actually means when our plant is closed down, or a supplier can't deliver, or when a distribution centre sending stuff to retailers may have to close.

It's not just a precaution, but an actual fact if half of the staff is poorly.

It's the chain. You want toilet rolls. Your supermarket orders some from a supplier who may or may not have all the staff in to take the order. The distribution centre might be open, or not. Oh and then the plant producing the product may need to close if there's not enough staff to run the plant. Or if the raw material supply is not there.

                Maddening, but enlightening, isn't it?

Well, the supply chain has got more fragile and vulnerable the more extended it has got on all fronts. Computerisation had put the efficiency of the whole system at a level never seen before but, again, if there's a problem with the software or maintainance it's vulnerable.
I don't think the main body of the public is acting hysterically over the virus but there will always be that element that goes into full Air Raid Siren, flashing lights mode. There will be those who turn up at the Doc's with the virus, or turn up at A&E despite all the warnings not to. There will be those who will ring 111 at the slightest sniffle convinced they have the virus and they're the ones that people seem to focus on and enlarge to a proportion that is the same as the ordinary people taking reasonable precautions and trying to carry on as normal.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

And a lot of the supply issue comes from the (30 year old?) JIT shake up. Just in time has come back to bite us.

@ARMANDII You forgot to mention all those who couldn't care less and will carry on as before, those that haven't even heard of the virus and the 'dont' tell me what to do brigade' who will undo the good work of the majority of us unselfish citizens. As a country we have a very different mentality to China where they are used to being bossed around, hence they do as they are told so China has got the virus under control. Over here, we won't get the virus under control like they have, just look at the empty shelves to see the bad side of our national character. I blame Maggie Thatcher.

I was in Tesco at 6 a.m. this morning and they had the ice cream. If you had let me know I would have saved it for you.

Ah, the joy of percentages! I read yesterday that the mortality rate for this virus in the UK is currently at 5.9%, and that percentage was approximately double that of anywhere else in the world. That indeed is a worrying statistic, and is quite damning of the way our country is handling things.

However, to now put that horrific mortality rate into perspective - 10 people have died in the UK, out of a population of over 60 million. In the 2017/2018 winter period, just under 30,000 people died in the UK of flu. The mortality rate for flu is a much lower percentage, because of a number of factors, but mostly being that more people get it and less people die from it as a percentage.

Is this virus dangerous? It would certainly appear to be very much the case. Is it more dangerous than flu? Possibly, but the morality figures (numbers, not percentages) are currently much lower - so why has the world disappeared up its own backside over this particular virus?

We keep getting told that it is devastatingly bad, yet our own Prime Minister is off to the footy at the weekend - - a gathering of circa 80,000 people. We are one of only three countries in Europe and the US that have not banned mass gatherings and sporting events - - why?

As for the eejits stockpiling toilet roll and soap, and folks being reminded to wash their hands, I have to ask what the hell they are doing under normal circumstances? If you need to be reminded to wash your hands after you have been to the loo, then you deserve everything that is coming your way.
