Absolutely, we do have to look after ourselves, and I am lucky in as much that my health seems to be reasonably stable at the moment, and also fortunate that I am able to describe things well via over the phone or via email (I prefer phone, as I battle to keep up with my emails a lot of the time), and my surgery are happy to do telephone consultations if needed. I just wonder if, under the circumstances, some of our good practice (and it really is good practice) is working against us?

We have just been out shopping because we actually needed loo roll - we buy it from Costco once every six weeks or so, purely because it is cheaper to buy it in bulk from them. There was no loo roll at all in Sainsburys last night, so we had no choice but to head toward Costco this morning. It is utterly nuts in there - much, much worse than Christmas. Queues for the tills are literally to the back of the store, and they have toilet roll which they are rationing to one pack per customer (that pack has five packs of 8 or something like that in it). We were happy with just the one, although I did have a 'just in case' thought and headed to the tools aisle and got some 'shop towels' (essentially thinner, blue tissue that is a bit rougher, but it will wipe your bum just fine if needs must.

I don't really like having to think like that and buy 'just in case', but the way it is going at the moment you don't really have a choice. :dunno:

Thankfully, we are generally very frugal anyway, and do a lot of batch cooking as well as freezing any veg etc that is not going to be used whilst it is fresh; so we have a big chest freezer, a smaller upright fridge/freezer in our utility room, as well as the fridge in the kitchen and we are well stocked up. I reckon, if pushed, we could manage quite happily for around 8 weeks on fairly minimal additional stock (maybe the odd bit of veg, eggs, and milk)

We normally do batch cooking so have just upped the amount slightly and have frozen it. This is just in case we need to isolate, being in the high risk category, so we could get by for two weeks without disturbing anyone else to help us. I'm even prepared to drink water instead of tea. :rolleyespink: :heehee:

With stores now starting to limit customers to only 5 cans of food (that's in total, not 5 cans of each), it's going to be difficult (impossible?) to buy a 'normal' weekly shop for just a single person, let alone a family or to last 2 weeks.

For example 1 can each of say tuna, baked beans, tomatoes, soup and peach segments and that's your lot when going to buy a 'family' shop.

Next they'll ration packets, so 1 pkt each of cereal, biscuits, crisps, tea and sugar and that'll be your lot, whether buying for a single person household or a family of 5. (I've excluded rice and pasta because there's none to be had anywhere).

We are well organised, well OK ,hubs is well organised!!
Our freezer is always well stocked with HIS batched cooked meals and to be honest we could survive for 6 weeks, maybe more! All I would probably add would be a couple more bottles of milk because I'm really not keen on hubs soya milk...but if push came to shove then I would have to. The only milk I have is on my breakast.

I would miss fresh fruit as we eat loads of it, so yes I would try and buy some under ripe and store it in the garage and also cook some up to freeze.
What would be really dismal is not being able to eat a daily big serving of mixed salad....we don't miss a day without enjoying one...so yes that would be a toughie.

Yogurt would also be missed too.

We have a larder that is well stocked with long lasting/ non perishable food items and hubs is a dab hand at bread making for when the frozen bread drawer runs out, but we only eat one loaf a week.

I drink hot water several times a day already so I wouldn't miss it if we ran out either @shiney.
However that would be highly unlikely as we have a 'tea cupboard ' stocked with all sorts of different teas , black, green, herbal, fruit and medicinal brews. We also have a good range of coffee too.

We feel quietly positive that we would be fine without having to ask for additional help.:fingers crossed: :)

Can anyone tell me what we are stocking up for???
              I'm finding it all confusing.

Is it in case we actually get the virus ourselves, in which case I assume 7 days is the specified time of going around ringing a bell and shouting out "unclean".

Or, is it incase we get this so called "lockdown", which I assume could go on for months.

              I'm getting conflicting information?

"Keep calm and carry on", along with panic and stock up for the worst scenario?

I go to Morrisons every sat morning for my weeks shopping, been doing it for ages, kind of know by sight most people that are there at the same time.
This morning I didn't recognise anyone, the place was full of people with trolleys totally loaded up , one bloke had even grabbed a tray of around 40 sausages that were bound for the restaurant and he had them taken off him at the till.:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

It seems we just lurch from one crisis to another these days.
At least the petrol pumps were quieter than normal.

Sow the seeds now and you will be self sufficient in some weeks' time when the peak is expected to hit. Beetroot leaves are great as well and come up quickly. Ditto pea sprouts. We gardeners are certainly in a good place if there is a situation where the shops close for a long period, especially now as the growing season is about to start. :)

I'm even planning to plant a Spaghetti tree and sell the produce in black market.

We're not stocking up Pete...this is just how we run things ,that's why IF things ran out OR if a 'lockdown ' happens we are pretty confident all will be OK.

Living out of town with no nearby shops for the last 38 yrs has made up think ahead, especially when our 3 boys were young and living with us.
Plus the fact apart from popping out to buy veg ,fruit and dairy products during the week ( often linked into when we have other errands to attend to in town) we only do a main shop once a month.

Our local GP's in the area are now starting to shutter their doors. Just had a text through about basically staying away, others have outright closed!

I can actually remember seeing that programme about the 'spaghetti tree' my siblings and I were very young and our parents played along with it too..until we drove them nuts insisting that we should get one in our garden!!:roflol:

Likewise, we are not stocking up any more than we normally would. We tend to buy some stuff (loo roll, cleaning products, even meat to some degree) in bulk simply because that is how Costco sells it, and it ultimately works out a hell of a lot cheaper. For example, we buy a bucket of washing powder for roughly £15, but that is large enough to last us almost a year. Translate that to the likes of Bold/Ariel etc, then that would be almost £15 every couple of months.

We also tend to shop for a month (barring fresh veg etc), because I hate going shopping; once every month is plenty for me. Otherwise, I hate waste - I would rather batch cook and freeze, than end up lobbing veg out onto the compost heap.

They reckon it's 14 days if you get the lurgy and 7 days from feeling OK after recovering. The original 7 day thing is just in case you have been in contact with someone who has it. Then they say isolate for 7 days to see whether you come down with it. :noidea:

I drink four mugs of hot water first thing each morning. Then some water or weak tea during the rest of the day. I need to be not far from a loo (or not far from the compost heap :heehee:) by just after lunchtime when the full effect of the four mugs reaches my bladder. :hate-shocked: :lunapic 130165696578242 5:
