Yep madness, can't see how it would be appropriate action for all over 70s.

Likewise ..if I was over 70...I've a good few years yet;).. as my hubs is, yes hopefully we could do a online shop, but only if we could get a slot. My sister and brother are local, but are not able bodied enough to help us and all our sons are in full-time work and live up in London. Our only nearby neighbours have a young family to care for and I certainly wouldn't put upon them.

BBC: "Over-70s - and younger people with certain health conditions - will need to remain at home and have groceries and vital medication delivered, the health secretary said"

Around 10% of the UK population (67,782,114) are 70 and over, so approx. 6.8 million, plus all the others with medical conditions, so probably over 7 million people to look after indoors and deliver everything to them.

For comparison, how many deliveries do Amazon make each week? If you want to buy something online, it might be a good idea to get it PDQ [1] before the UK's delivery drivers get diverted to other duties.

P.S. What happens with households consisting of mixed age groups/health, do some have to move out, or do the whole household go into isolation?

[1] I just ordered a new mobile for myself so our daughter can have my old one to replace the one where she's cracked the screen. I've been watching the relatively new model I want getting scarcer and scarcer, not surprising considering where they're made.

Tip for online shops for the elderly - book them up every week for months in advance now, ordering some high value items in stock to get to the minimum amount, then change the order to what's required week by week.

This is just the sort of statement that is really ( add expletive here ) me off.......

As I said earlier Iceland are delivering. A lot of take aways deliver. Some have said they will leave food at your door and you put the money in an envelope through the letterbox then get your food once they've gone.
If you're old enough why don't you apply for meals on wheels. What about a company like Wiltshire Foods, they deliver meals.

Good tip @Scrungee .....I booked my Dad's Christmas shop months earlier . I put random items on it just to secure the slot and then gradually changed it to what he actually required.:blue thumb:

A plea for the BBC to maintain the free TV licence for all over 75 year olds ,as they will have nothing else to do as they will all be self isolated......

Yes my Dad has Wilshire Farm Foods @KFF , he only has their dinners and puddings but they also do breakfasts and I think they may do sandwiches and lunches too.:dbgrtmb:

The real problem though isn't now but later when things reach a peak.....deliveries will then become very over stretched.

Actually, I don't mind an "advised" isolation period as it will mean I can work and sit in the garden during the coming, hopefully, warm Spring and early Summer months without feeling guilty:hapydancsmil::heehee: The odd bottle of wine sitting on the Patio would also be an encouragement and, of course, I will have to do the fortnightly shopping expedition to make sure that I and the Kittens don't starve.:dunno::cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Ah...but you wouldn't be allowed to go on a shopping expedition .

Agree it sounds nice but I think it would soon wear a bit thin.
Obviously if I had to then I would abide by the rules.....but I'd get serious cabin fever, even with my lovely hubs for company I'd still need to see our friends.

Meals on wheels have now been privatised, and in our area (nationwide?) are supplied by Corporate Catering Services

We checked them out for my elderly inlaws, but it appeared they could turn up anytime over something like a 3 hour timeslot, which wouldn't coincide with carer's visits or anybody being available to be there to asist with feeding them.

Wiltshire foods supply just that, food, so everything else still requires going out to the shops. In our experience we saw them as only being potentially use for those people who were bedbound or lacked the ability to prepare their own meals.
