We'll be alright here - we've got our gardens and will be spending our time tending them whenever we can (or sitting back and enjoying a cuppa looking at them, if the weather is really good), so us gardeners are going to be the calm ones.

Shineyland has closed its borders to all but essential people and services. There is a form to fill in if you want to enter. Anyone bringing food or bog rolls is exempt! :old: So far, birds, cats, rabbits and squirrels are ignoring the rules. :noidea:

@ARMANDII - whilst none of what the government has said is mandatory, my own personal view is that the only word missing there is 'yet'. As you know more than anyone, we are policed 'by consent' in this country, and when our Prime Minister and government give guidelines, we follow them. Beside that, we all have a responsibility to each other - not only those whom we know and love, but to every other person in our society.

I confess I have been up half the night with this nonsense going through my head - firstly, feeling like an utter failure because here I am a matter of months after returning to the workplace, once again being essentially forced to withdraw and stay at home for the foreseeable future (and the current advice is suggesting that will be at least 12 weeks). I can currently work from home, however if there is a shutdown then that would obviously change; Mrs C cannot work from home, so I am now a taxi driver (isolated in my lovely little cocoon) to try and minimise her contact with the outside world, as she is already over-exposed working in a pharmacy. However, there are other worries that will be shared by many - who pays the rent and the bills when this all goes pear-shaped? Is there going to be any sort of priority given to planned grocery deliveries for those of us who cannot go out shopping? There are many more questions and fears for many folks that remain unanswered, and to elude to one of @pete's points, the media is currently making matters worse by sensationalising and capitalising on those fears, in turn driving panic and causing the panic buying etc. The media need to take their heads out of their backside on this one.

I have read, that the underlying psychological cause of stockpiling and panic buying, is that deep down, people do not trust the government.
On the surface, it may seem selfish and cold hearted, but its just an understandable survival instinct

IMO - people (not just the UK) will go along with this change of circumstances for a short period of time. 6 weeks, maybe 2 months. But no income, trapped at home, boredom and frustration is going to make a volatile mix. Would not surprise me if there wasn't worldwide civil unrest

Well, because of the changing scenario, FC, the word "yet" has been hanging in the back of every Government statement. I think we've all recognised that should the situation get worse advice given might well become mandatory. This Government already has all the powers it needs to close things down, put the Army on the streets, impose movement restrictions because all those Laws still exist under legislation drawn up under the emergency conditions of WW1 and WW2, you can also throw in several centuries old laws as well (as did some Remainers during BREXIT). But, unlike other Governments it has, in my opinion, taken actions after consideration from Scientists and Economists, and also because this is a democratic country where such drastic actions are taken with great reluctance.

I don't think that is the real element of panic buying is not trust in the Government but a animal instinct to survive. Blaming the Government is just an excuse to not blame themselves for their actions.

Well that's uplifting :heehee: lets just remember all you need is a little common sense and this will all pass, why on earth would you use the word "Trapped" at home ,and there is no need to be bored and getting frustrated is pointless so lets be positive its all about your mind set and your perception of the present situation its spring time all new growth is around us and we still live in the finest country in the world:old:;)

We're just carrying on with a extra vigilance thrown in. Just scaling back on non essential appointments, meetings and social interactions.

Yesterday we had planned to go to a talk and tea tasting event held by a famous and local tea manufacturer with some of our friends but all of us decided it was not of any real significance to warrant exposing ourselves to the risk, especially as Hampshire seems to be the virus 'hotspot' at the moment.

Just use your heads.....and plenty of hand washing.:dbgrtmb:

I am not speaking for myself.
Not ideal, but I would be ok with staying at home for 2 weeks. Spring is coming. Lots to do in the garden.
Would amuse myself with this, reading etc.

But a lot of people would not see it the same way.

We had this discussion with my teenage kids , who seemed to think that if their school was closed, they would treat it as a holiday - go out with their friends "doing stuff!". Myself and the wife explained to them that this would certainly not be the case. They would be at home. With very limited contact with the outside world.
Wasn't so appealing all of a sudden.

It's going to be a lot longer than 2 weeks, Sirius:dunno:

All people, young and old, will deal with the situation in their own way so nothing changes!!

Look on the positive side....hate to say it but at least it's come at the right time for us, just imagine if it had arrived last October/ November.... dark dismal winter and isolation to look forward to...not to mention some very lonely Christmases!!

Even if I couldn't see my Dad ...(a) he has brilliant neighbours..(b) we have a thing called a phone..(c) he has a beautiful garden to sit in to puff on his pipe and watch the wildlife.....albeit the dreaded G E will have gone bananas!!!:)

We do all his shopping online for him anyway and also have his medication sorted online too. So ..yes in the worse case scenario, he will miss the social visits...but he will be really cared for.

There are several volunteer groups that have formed over here to do grocery shopping and bring things to those who elderly, or have the virus and are in isolation. Our government is going to pay sick pay to those who are shut out of work because of the virus and companies cannot let a person go during this pandemic if they are off because of the virus. The government has shut our borders to most non citizens, citizens with symptoms trying to come back however Americans are exempt from this ban. Our schools are mostly closed. The private Muslims schools were the last to close and for some reason they waited until the government ordered them to do so. No idea why the hesitation.

I will still be taking my friend to his physio appointment at the hospital today. I guess those guys know how to keep things sanitized ..;)

Good afternoon this is not a moan merely an observation, went to the chemist this morning and there were 25 people waiting outside as they were only letting 2 people in at one time then locking the doors, the assistants had masks and aprons on,it was very cold standing about outside,so I had to wait 30 minutes outside just to hand over some repeat prescriptions which will be ready in 3/4 days:smile:

The sad but necessary action that I have taken is that as long as it takes I have taken the decision not to have any visits from my family and friends, which includes all my Sons ,Daughters and Grandchildren but any other decision would be foolhardy in my personal opinnion
