As the elderly are bearing the brunt of the virus fatalities [1], maybe the increases in pension age can be reversed to free up some employment for the young? I don't rate the employment prospects of this year's school/college/uni leavers very highly.

[1] EDIT: And perhaps those with serious health conditions could also be allowed early retirement, as employees in some occupational pension schemes are allowed to do.

Wickes has lifted their minimum 5 for delivery restriction on several items and has compost and manure on offer. Thanks :)

I have just bought a new office chair and a desk from Amazon, in the long run working from home must be more ergonomic than the current nearly stable office chair (weeee!!!! weeee!!!) and a tiny desk with a jumble of "his and hers" cables underneath.

After a week of working from home I'm so impressed with the community feeling in our company globally. The colleagues I do not actually know share their personal circumstances and wish me well, everybody has their video on on calls, and people are going way beyond their duties to help out when someone is stuck with a bad connection or overwhelmed with sorting out BCPs.

We now have a walking date every day at 4pm with The Teenager and Skype coffee break with the grandparents on Sundays.

It's an overwhelmingly odd situation, but there are some very positive side effects, such as caring for your elderly, environmental relief and the community spirit across countries and social boundaries.

I hope the government will also provide us Good Citizens with a free mallet to whack any idiots who try to profit on the situation or are just scaremongering. Whacking is a good way to excercise the core muscles I hear :heehee:

It's not as bad here as some of those examples. Admittedly, in the nearest big town the supermarkets are getting rushed but the staff that I know that work at them say all but a very few are quite nice. They have also started limiting how many items people can have.

In the very small town (the inhabitants call it The Village) everyone was very polite in the small supermarket, they all kept their distance from each other in the queue and nobody had their trollies laden. At the end of the queue the manager had asked one of his young female staff to stand there and escort any old or infirm customer to the front. There was only one problem with that. She told me that she wasn't really the right person for that job as she was under 20 and everyone looked old to her! :heehee:

They will be able to get jobs ok.
Just maybe not the ones they wanted so will end up on the unemployed list while we import labour from other countries.

              One town 2 different stories.......

Local pub landlord who also owns a late night bar. Yesterday late afternoon he gave an interview saying it had cost him thousands to shut up his pub and throw stock away ( both beverages and food ).
At 8 o'clock last night he announced that he was opening up his late night bar until 5 am this morning . What he didn't reckon on was his building landlord had seen him post on Facebook about moving all his stock over to charge extra for it and kicked him out and changed the locks.

Another pub landlord has kept his pub open as a takeaway/off licence as well as offering deliveries and has reported a good trade all day.

British Columbia, Canada - now in lock down. My daughter is a driving instructor there. Her bosses couldn't care less what happens to their staff, even though she works in a confined space (car). Her students are almost non existent (understandable) but now when she's out on the road she is being abused by the public for working while she can, despite the risk to herself. If she doesn't work she doesn't get paid.

Back on the Isle of Man, the only place that seems to be making sense out of all this. They have now set up a temporary clinic at the TT grandstand. People are invited to pull up in their cars to be tested for the virus via their car windows. A drive through in effect.

@Sheal the whole country is in lock down. She is entitled to unemployment payments immediately if she declares self isolation. Her employer can be severely dealt with if he insists on her working in a confined space and also in an industry that is not essential.

She should contact EI at gc.CA for instructions on how to maneuver to a pay cheque.

If she insists there is no help, she is being lied to. Our governments on all levels are also ensuring that an employer cannot fire you for self isolating or being unable to attend work due to social distancing.

It is now law. No compromises.

Please get her to check it out! :)

It was good that the government has brought out this 80% of pay if you're laid off but the employer and employers need to be aware of the possible pitfall of handling it wrongly.

If you are off sick or told to isolate because of Covid then you can claim sick pay - and so can anyone in the household who can't go to work because of it.

The 80% is to do with what is known as a Furlough worker (Coronavirus Job Retention Scherme). You must not be 'laid off' which means being taken off the payroll otherwise you (your employer) won't qualify for it. So if your boss says he is going to lay you off (sacking you)you should discuss being a furlough worker. To be a furlough worker you are still on the books but must not do any work. Otherwise you are sacked (no benefits) or redundant and must receive redundancy pay. It's possible that the firm could work out a rota so that you all move in and out of furlough so you all get a chance at full pay - but this is still being worked out. The firm will need to apply to HMRC online (see link inside the link below).

                      COVID-19: guidance for employees

I am not an expert on this matter but have tried to take in what has been said by this government document.

Just remember, if you get laid off before the employer applies for furlough then you (it's the employer that gets it for you) don't get the money.

I made a Trump out of my visit to the Hardware Store today,..the usual walking straight through had changed to a mind boggling system,..which i can see now was the right thing.

1 Member of staff outside holding customers from entering until a customer came out from shopping.

Another member inside the door making sure you washed your hands,..being a Hardware Store they had set up 2 hand basins.

Third member of staff inside the actual store giving you the final instructions,..keep distance,..shop quickly.

Soooo i wasn't thinking clearly when i spotted all the barriers,..i asked for three bales of briquettes and two bags of Bird Nuts.

Which size bags of nuts do you want?,..oh the big ones please,..oh i will get a member of staff to take them out to your car,..gosh i was thinking how kind they are though i thought perhaps i look frail,..me being 5'10 and moves fast lol,

Then the member of staff passed by pushing 3 bales of briquettes and 2 Sacks of nuts,..i didn't have the heart to tell him it was 2 big bags i wanted,..not 2 sacks,..i tried not to flinch when the cashier said,..that will be 101 euros.

@CanadianLori my daughter has replied and says Canada isn't on total lock down yet. The people of BC have been requested to isolate but it's not mandatory yet. She said you may have different regulations where you are.

Very poor .. they must be the only province who hasn't taken sensible steps. This is going to sound prejudiced or red neck, but BC has an extremely high percentage of the Chinese population in Canada so maybe they are hoping for a miracle and trying to be politically sympathetic. Don't know but it is so so lefty there!

Crossing my fingers that she is okay and doesn't come into harm's way. :grphg:

My daughter thanks you for the information. She's not sure if she can claim if the regulations kick in as she works on contract. Something she'll have to find out about should the time come.

Yes, I understand that, fortunately the higher numbers are around Vancouver and she lives quite a way from there.

                                Thank you. :)
