The intention is to drag it out in terms of not have a massive spike of patients coming into the NHS all at the same time, yes - but surely the act of shutting things down to stop people catching it is being negated by those carrying on regardless? If there are 10 people that have it without realising and they stayed at home for a couple of weeks, it would pass and they would infect nobody else; if they carry on cramming into the tube, that is potentially hundreds of other people that will catch it and so it continues. If nothing else, this carry on routine is putting us at risk of another spike when we do return to normal.

I think there is supposed to be a certain percentage of the population that needs to have immunity for the virus to die out, or at least be suppressed naturally.
      I cant remember the figure.

Without a vaccine the only way of doing it is by natural immunity, ie catching it and getting over it.

That's the "Herd" ideology, pete, that was being put out by the Government, but then they learnt that the mortality rate would be unacceptably high so that has been abandoned at least publically.

There is that theory, yes - however, reducing the numbers that can pass it on will mean that such 'herd immunity' is built up at a more controlled pace, and that in turn builds knowledge and capacity in the NHS to cope with it. Everyone carrying on heading out to pour concrete on building sites etc is massively increasing the potential for more people to get the virus at any one time. It is not the individual that has it that is the real problem - it is the twenty or thirty people that they come into contact with.

            Publically is the keyword.
The way I see it is that at the moment nobody has immunity and there is no vaccine, apart from a few drugs that might easy it when you actually have already caught it, the herd ideology is pretty much the only plan on the table.

Or they could try the way they tackled the foot and mouth outbreak.
That was a total disaster as well.

Believe me, ANY drugs/equipment that easy things when you are fighting for air are better than nothing.

That's exactly what Boris is trying to do. The same number of people will be infected - but over a longer time period - so that the NHS doesn't get snowed under and can treat all those who become infected - increasing the survival rate. I think I've said this before - but the longer this goes on - the more time we have to develop a vaccine/treatment.

Don seems quite hopeful of a treatment looking at the news today - he reckons it will all be sorted by Easter...

I received my text from HM Government telling me I must not go out, so I'll either walk up and down my garden for 15 minutes or I will be the face at the window:rasp:

He's not trying to talk it up to the people, he's trying to talk it up to the Markets......and if he says it "it's great, really, really great, it's tremendous, it's fantastic, it's tremendous" you just know it ain't:dunno:

I’ve decided even though Gove made a statement about work, to sit back and see what happens this week. I’ve a feeling we may see more measures but I’m seeing mixed views on another site and it looks like in Ireland they have stopped domestic gardeners from working as it’s not essential work.
Trouble is what Grove started is already out of date.
I’ve had mixed reviews from customers, some seem not be worried while others have understood my position and theirs.
I also have a view that while it’s nice to have a nice lawn and borders it’s not the end of the world if it gets a tad out of hand.
Sadly today I heard a young lady of just 21 died at Wycombe Hospital and it kind of brings the whole situation in perspective even more that we need to break the cycle.

                            A lot more than that.

If each of the initial10 infected people went out and about and infected 2 others every day, and the newly infected also went out and infected 2 others every day, in 2 weeks there would be an additional 47,829,680 cases!

I like that true statistical example :blue thumb: but it falls down on the same principle as pyramid selling. You, and the people you meet ( a fairly closed group except in big conurbations with mass transport), would have to be in contact with people who have not already been affected.

It is still a good example of how dangerous it can be.

Well, after last weekend when the sun came out and Ireland and his wife leapt in their cars and invaded beaches etc in hordes.... Social distancing???? The Gardaí were out in force and so were other agencies Communities are fighting back! It endangers our old folk and in rural and coastal areas we are plentiful.... that was Sunday. Locally the beaches were crowded dangerously. On Monday my local community leaders had an emergency meeting of GPs etc and when I called the pharmacy about my due repeat prescription I was referred to the new Community Action group. ( I cannot go offisland, am in official Isolation, age and illness, and my usual "errander" is likewise.) So I called and by lunchtime Tuesday my meds were here at the gate! Now since midnight the entire country is in all but lockdown but my supply lines are intact and working well. Deeply grateful. They sent an info sheet with all the numbers to call etc. Great work .
