I think TV is essential and combats loneliness, especially if you don't have a computer/mobile phone with all the bells and whistles. We went for four years in the early 80s without one.

I get info from the TV news and news online (Notebook). I do not use a mobile phone although I have one for emergencies when out. We live in the country so don't get newspapers. The TV is good for mental good health with channels such as National Geographic, Discovery and various nature and cultural programmes, also cookery and quiz shows, lots to keep the mind active. I do not and have never watched 'soaps'. We do watch movies and certain series. I was housebound for nearly two years and believe me it was a lifeline.

Being on lockdown now it is probably more essential for mental stimulation and awareness.

I have to totally disagree with you @Islander77 . For one thing I presume you have some sort of computer/laptop/ internet access device which keeps you in contact with the outside world. My mom is in her mid 80's has no computer/laptop , just a mobile phone with no internet access. She would be totally lost and depressed without her TV.

Whilst on the subject, being on lockdown under the current crisis, T'other Half and I (plus two cats :cat-kittyandsmiley::cat-kittyandsmiley:) are watching a bit of TV, Live PD Cam on Crime Investigation ... I do like my criminal shows! It is sunny and nice, 17c but quite breezy so will go into the garden later, maybe have lunch out there. I do feel for those in apartments without a balcony even. TV may be a life saver to them.

I crochet a lot and a few months ago gave 22 pieces (afghans, shawls, scarves, tops, etc) to charity ... have another half dozen pieces but will run out of yarn in a few weeks but may get some on line (I get most from England anyway). Must get back onto my book writing. There is lots to keep ones hands and mind occupied in these difficult times.

Whatever you do, take care everyone and be safe.

Just read this from the Beeb:

"Firefighters in the UK are planning to drive ambulances, deliver medicines and transport bodies during the "humanitarian crisis" of the coronavirus outbreak.

Transport bodies - those words scare the willies out of me - let's pray to God that we don't need the firemen to do this.

My grandkids whistle. They also sing whilst in the shower. It's such a pleasant sound to hear :)

And I have the TV on most of the time I'm inside and these days, they are tuned to news broadcasts. When I'm outside and no one is around, I sometimes have the radio on (softly) . I like music and I like listening to the clever and fun comments the personalities add to stories about things other than the virus. There's nothing at all funny about the virus and at least they have the good taste not to even try that one on.

@Islander77 I have to disagree with you. My brain has not turned to mush and I am quite capable of complex thoughts and even sensible decisions. ;)

Good morning Had to go out in the car on my own windows wound down and a cold wind on my face, that's blown away some of life's cobwebs after one whole week in the house;) drove down to morrisons just to take a look and the queues were unreal, they had been queueing since 5 am and Morrisons didn't open until 8am,just then "Patsy Cline came on singing "Crazy":heehee:

I then drove back to my local shop and thought I shall have a look in there, there were about 20 people queueing and yes they were keeping 2 meters apart but the aisles are so narrow that the people had to squeeze past each person in the queue to get stuff off the shelves ,I had to reprimand two gentlemen to stop this happening and arranged a queue which wasn't near the products, now I am going to take Tiny and Penny over the fields for a walk on the wildside;)

TV is definitely essential to my Dad and older sister, both live on their own ,both have health issues and both are very deaf. It they relied on radio only I think the neighbours would complain!!:heehee: Both use subtitles on their TV...and all remains peaceful.:dbgrtmb:

Just been talking to my older sister face to face via the Alexa Show..during our chat she received a text from a neighbour who had just left her a box of fresh fruit and veg on her doorstep, she got up to call out a thank you to him and saw he was doing the same to other neighbours too. It warms your heart.

Similarly my brother went to his front door to collect up his mail and opened it to get some fresh air, a woman and child were passing by and on seeing that he has to rely on crutches she called out ' If you need anything we're only across the road ' . How lovely!:)

Same here @Upsydaisy , someone across the road from my mom saw her out with her Drive walking aid and later pushed a note through her door with her phone number etc.
I go to see her 3 times a week now, cut down from every day.

It's very different where I live. I live on a mixed estate ( low flats, high rise flats and houses ) and except for gangs of kids ( probably aged 5 to 15 ) hanging around and using the playground until 11 o'clock at night there's no one around and no one offering to help anyone
