WHAT'S BUZZING OR FLYING NEAR YOU 2020

I noticed a ring on the Goldfinch in this picture below.

@Scrungee, my nearest nature Reserve is a 10 minute walk away where I will go for my 'exercise' occasionally. Some reserves such as Radipole and Lodmoor in Weymouth have rights of way paths through them which are usable but not the rest of the reserves.

 

Yes @strongylodon the Yellowhammers came back at the start of winter, there are two pairs. I've only seen one male Siskin this winter. The Goldfinches tend to appear when there's a cold spell due, that will be over the weekend here. There were six here today amongst the other birds. Lots of Greenfinches that are usually winter/spring visitors. Chaffinches galore all year round and three pairs of Long Tailed Tits, again winter/early spring visitors. These only come for the fat balls, they don't touch anything else. There are two pairs of Greater Spotted Woodpeckers here too. There's a pair of female Pheasants here and they're making a fine mess of my lawn around the base of the feeding station.

Mr S noticed today that the Tree Creepers are back too but they are fast moving and I'm still yet to get a shot or two of those.

 

Today I heard the first bee.. He looked drunk, YOU know ,and his buzz was a little rusty but a bee he was. NB I do not feed or encourage birds as with six cats it would not be wise. My first year here there was a sparrow pair nesting in the 150 year old stone wall of the old cowshed right opposite my door and I kept getting bawled out by angry sparrows for living here. They went elsewhere the next year.

I have just realised that it is nearly April and... NO MIDGES yet. None all winter and usually every mild day they emerge in their hordes. The island is a midgehaven. Shows how unseasonably chilly is has been and is. Until the bee yesterday not a sign of insect life, and he vanished again

 

Strange, the birds in our garden have been busy all day.

 

In my garden I'm running out of fat balls! Blue tits, great tits and coal tits every day, occasional nuthatch and pied woodpecker, though the long tailed tits seem to have found other food recently.

 

If it's turned very quiet where you are @Fat Controller it may be making the birds edgy, they get used to the surroundings they're in. Or perhaps with people at home the local cats are out and about more. Who knows? I'm just guessing.

As with Strongy and Caroline my garden is busy. Mind you the colder weather is back and they tend to feed more a few days leading up to that.

 

Our pair of Pied Wagtails have been around nearly all day, feeding and picking up nesting material although the (darker) male was doing most of it.
