Distraction therapy while hoping extra pain meds clock in; mea culpa for being on my feet for far too long today.. All YOUR fault of course for working so hard and getting me to do the same.... ANYHOO... more seed trays sorted and filled. And taken in and out then in again as the small kitchen is the only safe place at night in this dreadful chilly weather. Broad beams (!!!) I mean beans! Pinks ie old fashioned dianthus.... sweet peas in a wonderful mix.. peas. Need to plant out some of the flourishing ones and cover them at night. Would have loved to work out there but too sore. Ah well!

Hi @Upsydaisy I used to be rubbish with cleome too, but I got some seed from wilkinsons this year and it came up like cress. I put it in the propagator at around 20 degrees, compost was nothing special. If they're still allowed to open it would be worth getting some - maybe tey have got a good batch of seed.

I thought you knew, Perki:dunno: I've been a keen amateur Astronomer for years and got fed up of street and surrounding House and garden lights messing things up, plus having to assemble the telescope every night. So, I had the base constructed by a local brilliant Landscaper, in 2015, who wanted to fit the appearance to match the Cottage style garden of mine.......

Which houses a 12 inch Telescope permanently on a GOTO Equatorial Heavy Load Mount which "talks" to the Observatory and so the Roof moves as the Telescope automatically moves when tracking a target.
This is the 12" Telescope which also has a dedicated astronomy camera attached to it.

Hi good people, only just joined but thought I would post anyway, and see how this works
Spent the day today weeding, subsequently found my green bin was full and it won't be emptied till Friday, so decided to construct a makeshift compost 'bin' out of some old fencing.
So, first question is does it need a top ? Secondly, my late father used to use stuff called Garotta (possibly) Seeing as I cannot get out at the moment, is there anything else I could use ?

Hi @Morgie and welcome to GC :sign0016:

I am no expert on composting, but I know that peeing on a compost heap does tend to get things going. Remember to build in some layers of cardboard etc to help as well.

Welcome to the forum @Morgie !

I got a few hours of sunshine so went out and looked at fixing the French door I had used to make a cold frame. One side had come completely loose. Figured it was too far gone so glued to together and secured it across in a few places with twine as a backup as I don't want the bulk item pick up people to get cut by the glass. Then I removed the rest of the framing and trashed it. Put the door down the side of the near the front and ready to set out for collection on Friday. Discovered I had not put holes in the bottoms of a couple of pots that will be used for hot peppers in May so got out the soldering and melted a a tidy hole in those.

Was thrilled to see an allium popping up through the layer of leaves on the raised garden. Those were Pound land bulbs because I was too late to order them through a nursery and I figured I'd get what I paid for. Bonus!!!

And put two dead rats on the back fence for Orzech to collect later. :)

Hi Morgie, welcome to Gardeners Corner:love30::thumbsup:

Not really if you don't let the contents dry out too much. Some people do cover their compost heaps with an old carpet or the like. I left my old compost heap open..........

                  upload_2020-3-29_21-47-12.png

Garotta was basically Nitrogen with some trace elements added so you can use basic nitrogen powder or granules, so something like......

It's not a necessary additive and a lot of people, including me, don't bother to use it.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Thanks for the info, wouldn't have been happy using chemicals, as we have 2 cats and a dog loose, BTW my compost heap pales into insignificance having seen yours

Pee into an old drinks bottle and add it that way - don't be getting the old fellow out in the garden (not least as it is still a bit chilly out there :heehee:)

True, but I am in the Ashford Office of Hotel California in SW London, and to be honest I don't have enough to be boasting about in the warmth, so the chilly weather is not going to be a good look......

Well, Nitrogen is a chemical granted but it is a naturally chemical that is vital for plants to produce leaves etc. There are two other naturally produced chemicals need by plants to thrive (a) Potash, which by plants to produce fruits etc and is used by those growing Tomatoes to produced better crops, (b) Phosphate, which is used for encouraging root growth and also fruit/crop production.
So, gardeners use them all the time to get better plants, flowers, fruit etc as all three elements are needed by plants.:dunno::cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:
