What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2020

When I first grew parsnips I manured quite heavily and had the best parsnips I've ever managed. Tried to follow the sage advice since but never really got same results. Waiting to get the new pad sorted and will be quite keen to get back to the veg

 

This afternoon I decided to tidy up the pots and trays area. This is a nice name for the place where I dump them until needed. Unfortunately it is under the willow tree so they were chock a block with dead willow leaves. Most of the pots had been laid neatly in boxes but the boxes had filled with leaves. The trays are the ones for holding pots.

All this may not seem too onerous a task but with about 3,000 pots and 200 trays it amounts to a lot of bending, emptying and then stacking in a reasonable order. The leaves filled a wheelie bin and my bad back and shoulder have required a massage and I can't lift my right arm

Of course, all the digging this morning may have had something to do with it.

 

We have found, annoyingly, that Choisya root runs. In a part of the garden that we rarely look down towards the ground a very large Choisya has root run under the paving (4" concrete base on top of which is street paving crazy paving which has then had other paving put on top). The roots have then run behind a large and 60 year old Hydrangea to grow up between it and the house wall.

We only noticed it when we went to prune back some of the dead branches on the Hydrangea. There are five Choisya stems between 3ft and 5ft high and close to an inch thick. I've now dug under the root runs and lifted the runners back to the paving. They're a good half inch thick at the paving. We're going to have to cut them off there and hope they don't regrow. If they do then we shall have to continue to cut them . I shall have a look to see whether I can find where they are running from, at the other side of the paving, but the large bush is right up to the paving and I can't bend under it. I may have to wait until Lewis can come again.
