Newbie in North East England

Hi all! I'm not actually a complete newbie here, as I managed about three posts back in 2014. However, like so many people, in the last couple of months I have suddenly found myself with a great deal more time to spend on gardening. Another change since I posted in 2014 is that I'm no longer technically a lone northern lass, which means I now have two lots of gardens to play with / look after - partner and I are living in joint home, probably planning to rent out my old house (which my 2014 photos are from) but obviously that's on hold while Covid19lockdown in place.

My old house:
* Located inland in the North East of England
* East-facing front garden, west-facing back garden, both involving large lawns and lots of shrubs round the edges
* Acid soil in the one part I tested last year

Joint house with partner:
* Located inland in the North East of England
* Currently the gardens don't count as gardens in my books - front garden entirely covered in shale; back garden has concreted area, paving, and badly-laid astroturf which had a forrest of weeds growing through it when partner moved in
* South-facing front garden, north-facing back garden, not tested the soil types yet

Nice to be here and I shall now resume where I left off in 2014 asking basic beginner-level questions
