Lawn rotovated but weed killer not applied first - weed kill now

New here, but thought i'd jump in for some advice straight away.....

i intend to lay new lawn as old lawn not touched for few years and full of variety of grasses, weeds and not level.

i strimmed down the old lawn which was about foot tall and extremely knotty, then rotorvated the whole area.

what i didn't do was spray any weed killer down....and worried that due to the amount of unwanted grasses and weeds i've rotorvated in, they will just take over any lawn i lay.

my questions is; should i therefore weed kill (glyphosate) the whole site now before putting down new top soil and turf - or just continue levelling add re-turf?

Putting glyphosate down now will do nothing as it only acts on vegatative growth and becomes inactive on contact with soil.

Other weedkillers are retained in the soil for some time, often months.

What will happen over the next few week is that all the cut roots of some types of weeds will sprout up again and lots of buried dormat seeds now lifted to the surface will also start to sprout.

If you can level and prepare the soil then leave it a few weeks to let all those things sprout, then treat it with glyphosate, would think that and then the turf will smoother any others trying to emerge.

Your soil looks very light and loose, so seems you need to 'firm' it well.

Try and rake out as much of the old chopped up stuff as possible. I did the same in my old garden, but did weed kill first. I then left it for a couple of weeks and applied another dose. I managed to get some proper bad ass stuff from a mate who’s dad is a farmer. Once rotavated and raked out it got a lot of the old stuff out. When I come to do the back garden/ playground in this house, I will use the same method. My old lawn was fantastic. I also added a couple of tonne of sharp sand and turned this in to aid drainage.

Should i do the 'garden shuffle' over it now or just leave as is.....as suggested I'm going to leave a couple of weeks and see what's sprouts up the kill.
