Carried on pulling up the Daffs in another border this morning. Moved a few plants around that I wasn't happy with. Planted out 4 more Hellebores that I found I have forgotten. Walked up the lane collecting more nettles for the 'stinky fertiliser ' ....boy does it smell !!! Fed most of the roses( a few to do tomorrow also fed the Azaleas too. Managed to book a click and collect at Inexcess for next Wednesday ( earliest date available) for 4 big bags of multipurpose compost.

 

I like them very much because of the texture in the leaves, very pretty.

I have put 4 x ‘L’ brackets in the channels of the GH framing and then screwed a length of 2x2 timber to these. Then the top of the table is attached to this piece of timber with hinges.

My sealed mini greenhouse seems to keep the slugs out, which is great.
But I underestimated how much the open bottom contributed keeping it reasonably cool.
I sealed the sides and fitted the bottom with insects netting in the hope that would be keep the airflow going, but it is definitely not enough.
After work I went checking, the termometer inside read 50 Celsius
The plants were obviously less than happy, but no casualties.

Today I fitted the other greenhouse the same way anyway.
I was just about to put the plants in and closing it, congratulating myself on a good job, but I felt a disturbance in the force..
Sure enough, in a tiny hole of the frame, a little snail was hiding, waiting for the restaurant to open :D

I think I'll fit both greenhouses with windows with flaps and insect nettings, to keep them cool. But until then, I'll better open them every morning, the plants need hardening anyway.

Also, I scraped the soil to check on some beans I planted and they seem to be developing (it has been a while, and I thought they were dead actually), so that's good too, fingers crossed

 

Our last frost for my area (a very temperate zone in Canada) is May 9th. First frost is around the middle of October. But the times outside of that are pretty brutal. It's like having someone turning the furnace off. Lots of Kids are trick or treating with winter coats under their costumes!

Our cellars must be insulated down 3 feet so as to be a foot below the frost line. The ground is frozen solid for at least the first 15 inches in an average year. Regs are to set on the caution side.

My unheated greenhouses don't get any occupants until really late April or early May else they would freeze. Lows this week were 28f at best so no annuals would survive that.

I only have the two unheated for two reasons. They sit on the deck outside my kitchen window at the side of my house and block the view of the hillbillies next door. And I keep my hot peppers in them all summer. One greenhouse is dubbed Shineyland Canada peppers prefer no wind... they only give it!

The heated greenhouse has a natural gas heater using gas from the house. If I want to barbecue, I have to disconnect the hose from the greenhouse heater and hook up the BBQ, then reverse when I'm finished. I've only got the one line going outside but it wouldn't make sense to have two as BBQ season is typically after last frost. That said, I have grilled out there at least a dozen times this year. Impetuous me!

And, I think I can put my snow shovel away this weekend. It hasn't snowed since Wednesday

For me, I spend a lot of times doing a waltz getting plants started after Christmas, moving them around to keep trying to fit more pots into my plant growing real estate and then suddenly, it's like doing the chicken dance trying to get everything out there. Good cardiac workout!

And trying to cram my heated greenhouse is the reason I was thrilled to see @rustyroots fold down staging. I'm going to make one with steel racks so that when they are lowered, lots of sun can pass through. Brilliant my friend, brilliant!!!!

 

More battles with brambles. Started painting patio walls. Watered the compost bins.

Hefin Thomas came on Weds to fit a new pump into the septic tank and a new pipe to the soakaway. Third visit and I was very hopeful this was going to resolve all the issues. Electrician came and wired up the pump. All wonderful and working. Checked it yesterday and all good. Checked today and not good. Pump has stopped working, water level in tank has risen and pump is now submerged . Pump is not meant to be submerged so probably useless now. Rang Hefin Thomas and left message on emergency number as out of hours. No reply. Really fed up with septic tanks. Is this ever going to end.

 

I know how you feel @luciusmaximus. I'm currently having my back garden wrecked by a mini digger as I have soakaway problems from my septic tanks. The work started Wednesday but won't be finished until Monday. The lawn is now a mess but it can't be helped.

 

Potting things up in the greenhouse, take a few dahlia cutting, watering, weeding, then "project work".

 

Just finished planting up a new border, dug from the far edge of the lawn. Some trees around, so hoping for their survival! It’s a ‘hot’ colours border, mainly for my BH as he’s not so keen on my blues, white and purples at the back! We’ll see. They will probably need extra watering cos of the trees behind. So much hard work, over 3 weeks, and was nervous about the planting, as it may not look right. But you can always move plants!!

 

Just passing an old dead tree in the garden and thought that looks nice just thought that looks nice
It’s an old dead tree we inherited no idea what it was, so we planted a wisteria by it a few years ago. the orange and black thing is the only thing the dogs not been able to destroy yet, we hide biscuits in it to keep him active.

 

It’s coming give me chance it’s quoted as a 2/3 man job but I’m just me doing it

I meant a picky of the Bara brith not the gazebo. There probably are peeps who'd like to see the gazebo but I'd rather see the food, yummyyyyyy
