OH bless her had to put up with my ranting as the panel pins are not the thin ones we used to get. She got on with weeding one of my deep beds, revealing the lovely black soil. So many nettles though to remove. My back will not allow me to bend to lift those weeds.

@2nd_bassoon - I just used MPC and grit, but I think I used a good rooting liquid - Clonex.

Just watering and continuing to harden off today. Will probably continue researching shade-loving plants for behind the shed and look at greenhouses that are out of stock and garden furniture that we're not ready to buy

Help please: All my five Water Butts are empty, don't like using Tap Water, but is there anything that I could add to this before using Tap Water.

I'm sure I did read somewhere you can add a little Vinegar.

If you're trying to remove chlorine (and not increase the acidity), homebrewers do that by adding Campden tablets, but then you'd need to leave it whilst the sulphite dissipates.

If you are in a hard water area (Ramsgate probably is) the acetic acid in the vinegar causes the dissolved calcium carbonate to lose the carbon dioxide leaving calcum acetate in solution. Calcium acetate is more soluble than calcium carbonate so you are less likely to get white deposits forming. Use to vinegar in the window washing water. I wouldn't recommend it for ericaceous plants though. As for chlorine I just leave the water to stand in an open container overnight before using it on anything that might be sensitive.

Well, I definitely wouldn't use Vinegar, John. White Vinegar is a recommended weed killer so I wouldn't use any thing like that near a plant. Nigel's advice on letting tap water stand overnight is sound but, to be honest, I'm sure a great many of the GC Gang use water straight from the tap, as I do, to water their gardens without seeing any detrimental effects to plants.
I use rain water only for my Carnivorous plants and, because of this long dry spell, I have nearly emptied one of the two 55 gallon Water Butts. Should I get to the point where both Butts were empty I might have to resort to the next best thing recommended for Carnivorous plants which is Distilled Water.:hate-shocked::dunno::cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Ok folks thanks for all the helpful info. One last question, what is the Vinegar dose per gallon of Tap Water please.

I wouldn't use vinegar at all. :noidea:

We always use tap water for everything - watered mainly by hose and sprinkler. We have 4 x 50 gallon water butts but in dry weather, like the last three+ months, they get used up in just over a week.

Using tap water doesn't have any detrimental effect on our plants apart from any dried water can leave little white marks.

Today we have watered the runners and French beans and the courgettes and sweet corn. Some of the beans are chest high but only just beginning to show flowers. We have made 11 tubs of plants (annuals, Dahlias etc.) and four have been picked up with more going out tomorrow. Sold more runner bean plants and courgettes plus ten Cleome, three Hebe salicifolia and made up some of the orders for tomorrow.

We also filled two wheelie bins with diseased Viburnum

                        Thanks .

There is some honey suckle growing up the trellis - I only planted it this year - but it is growing well - you can't see it at the moment because it's planted behind the trellis and is making it's way up and over.

The honey suckles were from Morrisons - very pleased with them.

Behind the picket fence is a hedge of Cherry Laurel - about a foot tall at the moment - but growing well.

The idea being that you will eventually only be able to see through the arch - and will have to walk through it to see what's on the other side. Also thought about placing a white statue at the other side of the arch to act as a focal point.

It'll be a few years before it gets to the stage where I am happy with it - but then that's gardening .

@john558 I always fill water butts in the evening after watering.
That way it stands all night and most of the next day coming up to temperature, I dont worry too much about chlorine or add in vinegar although I have used vinegar at one teaspoon to a gallon of water on plants that like acidic conditions.
And I think it works, my water comes straight out of boreholes in the chalk of the North Downs so is pretty hard.
