What's Looking Good In May 2020

Hi @Sheal , that's a new one on me .... Glumicalix . I love the colours. It reminds me of a wild Fuchsia.

 

It's apparently a rare plant @KFF and I stumbled across it in a local nursery. It's evergreen and seems to withstand all types of weather/temperatures, is happy in poor soil and doesn't mind being moved around or pruned harshly. In fact it's like a weed. The only drawback is that the foliage has a strong, pungent smell. I meant to take cuttings of it again this year but haven't got around to it yet.

 

I've just reserved one for £8.50 at a Scottish nursery ( they're not actually taking orders at the moment ), thanks for making me spend my money

 

Your location is stunning Sheal and I really like this herb, had to look it up. Very interesting indeed and from South Africa ... and you can grow it.

 

@Upsydaisy ,..it is indeed a lovely bush and the bonus before it produces its white bell like blooms is how the foliage changes colour from green to yellow to red.

Propagate in early Summer by using the new softwood,..it roots easy enough,..i use the Rooting Powder,..or Rooting Gel,..you could take Hardwood Cuttings in late Summer but it takes much longer.

 

Looking good at present is Campanula portenschlagiana,..growing at the base of Yucca alifolia 'Spanish Bayonet',..plus the huge amount of Lanterns growing on the Chilean Lantern Tree
Crinodendron hookerianum.

The Yucca alifolia is being cared for during the past eight years as it developed a hole where one can see the Coconut Fibre near the bottom,..all advise given was that there was no hope for its survival as the hole was almost through to the other side,..even on the BBC Gardeners World Forum that was the thought,..however i decided to clean out the area of the hole and sprayed with Neem Oil,..then used expanding Foam to fill the hole,..covered with a metal plate,.. then it was given more protection with Coconut Fibre,..after almost eight years its still growing.

The Tree also was leaning to one side,..now being corrected by a rope from the tree to a metal bar hidden among the foliage behind.

 

Thanks @glengarry23 ,I'll definitely give it a go. I'm just off now to my parents house to have a sort and tidy, so that eventually when we instruct the Estate Agents to put the house on the market it should look presentable.
I'll probably take some pics of the plants I want too.

@Sheal Glumicalyx reminds me of Zaluzianskya in flower, is it scented at night?

 

Thank you @Victoria. Yes, surprisingly it's growing very well and doesn't seem to be bothered by the heavy frosts during winter.

D'you know @pete I haven't got a clue? I'll go and check.....

.....no it's not as such. It has a faint smell of vomit, not exactly what you'd call scented.
