WHAT'S BUZZING OR FLYING NEAR YOU 2020

Yellowhammer. Been trying to snap one along that hedgerow for a while, and one appeared whilst I was stalking butterflies in an adjacent wildflower strip.

Cuckoos are quite vocal at the moment, I hear them here too.

 

Mandarin Duck by the river Stour.

 

I watched as a Kestrel tried to take a young sparrow yesterday but I disturbed it, so it failed. It's the first time I've seen one in the garden.

 

We have a family of Woodpeckers that have adopted the communal garden to feed. They fly down from the rowan tree to the sunflower seed feeder. The young can grip the edge of the tray and poke their heads in to the mop up broken bits that other birds have discarded.

Cedar Waxwings, Mourning Dove, and Painted Turtle.

 

Every decade or two Rose Coloured Starlings from Eastern Europe have a dramatic increase in numbers and migrate across to the west (mentioned on Springwatch). Normally a handful get this far and usually pale juveniles but this year hundreds have arrived here, mainly in ones and twos and one striking male has been in a Weymouth garden (in the next road to where I used to live) for a few days feeding on cherries. It was showing itself well this morning and is the first one I have seen.

 

Recent arrival in Poole Park but probably an escapee, Fulvous Whistling Duck, native to Southern USA and Central America.
